New Tyre sensors

Post by qprdude »

I'm getting new sensors fitted soon. Does anyone know if these are fitted with the tyre on? Not sure how long to allow for the job. I expect it will take a fair bit of time if the tyre has to be removed from each wheel to fit the sensors but it would be good to know if it's gonna take long enough for me to take SWIMBO shopping or if I can just have a coffee or two in the waiting room.
I realise the new sensors will have to be mated with the BSI too, so that will be another bit of time.
From the look of the pictures of the sensors, my guess is wheels off, tyres off, fit sensors, inflate tyres, refit wheels digi-box session to enable. :?:

Yes tyres need to come off to fit the sensors. Is it a dealer doing the job ? As well as Lexia you also need an little device that forces the valves to transmit to pair them up to the car. Do your wheels have solid centres & if so does the garage have the correct adaptor to balance the wheels again ?

Will take 1.5 hrs to complete, you can slip the valve in by breaking 1 bead, so it's not a full removal of the tyre.
I converted a 407 to normal valves, took about 40 mins today. Programming inthe new ones takes longer, but not more than another 30 mins.

Cheers guys. Yes, it's a Citroen main dealer and they have all the bits and pieces for the job. Don't think the new C5 has solid centres, but I could be mistaken. I'm now wondering if they will need to balance the wheels if the only break the outside bead. The tyre won't have moved on the rim, so should be OK.

The new c5 has wheels that can be balanced by tyre places around here so assume that means they don't need an adaptor? No one here could do my mk1 c5.

The garage just phoned to say the sensors are in stock. I can have them done today at 2 pm. They say to allow 2.5 hours for the job. Bugger, I just got back from service and MOT yesterday, so it's off back to Inverness for me again. It's a 2 hour 15 minute drive normally, but it's chucking it down here, and it's the Friday when Scottish schools break up for summer holidays so I guess I'll have to give it 3 hours.. Surprisingly, for a Citroen paid repair, they said to remember my drivers license for the loan car again.

Can I ask why you need new sensors. I am aware of the alloy valve stem corrosion problem but didn't think that damage extended to the sensor.
Thanks

Edit I think I have answered my own question - Citroen only sell the tyre valve stem and sensor as one complete unit. They do sell what is euphemistically called a repair kit but for some reason it does not include the stem- which is usually the part that snaps off after salt corrosion has weakened it. Ebay sellers have therefore stepped into the breach offering complete valve stem kits.

Left rear sensor was leaking. No corrosion, the valves were like brand new, but I always clean them and apply copperslip after the weekly wash. Citroen were happy to pay for new sensors and to have them fitted. To be honest, I'm not sure if the C5 X7 valves are still Aly, like the earlier models but they might be. Mine will always be cleaned and protected anyway.

Davie, too late mate, I've been and done it, and I'm back in Inverurie. The journey back was a bit of a nightmare on the A96 until after Elgin, when the traffic cleared a bit and the tractors disappeared!

Organise yourself a test drive from Ness motors, or Pedigree cars at Forres. I think you might be impressed with it. I love the car, especially on the open road.
I'm off to London/Surrey next week, and it's a pleasure rather than a trial in the C5 X7.

I usually find the a96 a bit slow. Cant really think of a time to get a clear run between Elgin and Inverness. I like Inverness. Its a far nicer place to go to than Aberdeen, I find the folk up there more talkative. I like the A9 north of inverness, done it quite a lot whilst aboard a boat that worked from scrabster. If I could get an extended test drive and take a run from Inverness to wick,,,,,,,would be a good day!

I had a great run up the first time, but I left Inverurie at 6 am.
I agree about Inverness. We quite often spend a weekend up there, and of course there is the massive car sales area of Harbour road to have a look round. It's a lovely little city, with some nice pubs and restaurants. We went to Urquart castle then Beauly the first time up on Wednesday, then stayed in the Holiday Inn at Stoneyfield. I went back today on my own as it was just an "up and back" trip.
They gave me a new DS4 1.6 diesel again as a courtesy car for a few hours. Not a bad car at all, but not really in the same class as the C5.

Probably not. There are plenty around, but I have to use the supplying dealership for my warranty.

If you opened a RENAULT specialist in Aberdeen, you could name your price!
The nearest Renault dealer is in a tiny village 40 miles away. Incredibly, a city of nigh on a quarter of a million people does not have a main agent.

Unfortunately, Arnold Clark are the Citroen Dealer in Aberdeen and it's not always easy to deal with them as their customer services could do with re-educating.
