ZX immobiliser fault

Post by woodykay »

My 1996 ZX 1.9d estate immobiliser went faulty exactly 1 year ago.
For a few weeks then it didn't happen again until now same fault has started.
Wont accept correct code, red light flashes and 3 beeps, input code again then constant flashing and beeping.
Have to disconnect battery to reset it and it's fine for a day or 2 sometimes then it happens again.
Happened on Saturday morning, did the reset thing then out in car 5 times with no problem over the weekend until Monday morning, 2nd trip out and fault happens.
Thought it was the battery so got new battery last year didn't make a difference.
We don't do a lot of miles, just do 2-3 mile runs to schools shops etc, occasional trips out but never far, Just did a 200 mile run yesterday so battery charge should be good.
Is it the heat? Funny how fault starts again when the cars been parked outside on hot days.
Anything I can do to fix it, sure I heard you can just disconnect the code panel once it's started? or do I have to get an auto electrician to bypass it permanently?

I'd agree unplug when its working. It can be disarmed without it working (I cannot recall the specifics) on some models.

If it had both red and green lights on at the same time assuming the keypad wiring is OK the usual cause is the round multiplugs at the front of the engine bay around / underneath battery area I think same as 306's. Both lights on at once mean "no communication"

Cheers!
I'd read how to do it, bypassing altogether, but the pulling the plug while it's running was a new one to me until today.
Sounds like it's the way to go as it's not going to cost me anything and the bypassing job was going to be £75-£100 with a local auto electrician.

Any idea how to get at the connector though? Remove dashboard? Which bit, how?
Googled that and not found the answer, will have a look at it later on and see if I can figure it out but any pointers appreciated!!!

From memory, I had to remove the ashtray, and some torx screws, then all the torx screws on the centre console. Lift this all up, and you should be able to reach the plug connector. Beware of the sharp metal clips holding the centre console to the dashboard, they hurt!

Cheers everyone! Worked a treat! No more problems.
Removing the bottom bit of dash just needed the 2 torq screws you could see through the air vent grills on either side of the immobiliser bit and 2 more further down near the footwell air vents.
Then a pull in the right direction and it popped off.
Getting at the connector was tight but it popped straight off.
Sorted!
