Diesel Tuning Box For 2.0 110 HDI

Post by johnway »

Hello everyone,
I have embarked on a tuning exercise (I hope) which may be of some interest to others thinking of doing the same (or those who may have already done so). I could not find a comprehensive user account on what appears to be a common tuning box re-labelled in the UK, Germany and Italy so here is one to peruse :
I purchased a Diesel Digital Tuning Box for £69.95 on ebay (I will withold the seller's id for now) and it speedily arrived, nicely packaged and with some comprehensive instructions. At this point I should point out that I had intended to use the box on my 2002 Peugeot 406 110, which has the same HDI engine and Bosch injector system as my 2001 C5, but seems not as efficient at towing my caravan. A few more horses and torque are sought after. It is important that the engine is cold and the ignition is switched off before proceeding, unless you enjoy blistered knuckles, scalding and doing heaven knows what to your engine management system. The supplied fitting instructions pointed me to the right plug/socket sensor on the common rail, so after taking off the plastic top engine cover (usually a quick lift off job as the special mounting rubbers have invariably separated from their respective studs), I quickly located it and immediately noticed what a little b. it was to get at and that it is the only sensor plug which is upside down!!. No quick disconnect the plug and plug in the new one here, that's for sure. I successfully unplugged the sensor at the first attempt using a small flat screwdriver to hold the locking tab open and a larger flat screwdriver to gently prise the plug out from it's socket. Before doing this I had secured the plug wiring with a thin bent wire to prevent it dropping into the bowels of the engine compartment after separation - good move !!. With the plug safely removed (it is a very tight fit against a housing which holds the diesel fuel filter housing - typical French design) I inserted it into the new tuning box socket - simples!!. Now for the fun part : I next spent about 30 minutes using every trick I could think of and a lot of my tool kit attempting to plug the new plug into the sensor socket without taking anything off of the engine...impossible !! Placing a tray underneath the engine, I removed the top rad hose at the thermostat housing, the inside diesel plastic pipe on the filter housing (squeeze the pipe at the white bits to pull off) and the nut, bracket and round clip which hold the large rubber pipes to the right of the filter housing. Only a few drops of coolant spilled out so no big deal. Holding the new plug upside down with my right hand squeezed into the now accessible sensor area and a flat screwdriver in my left, I was able to locate the plug into position. At this point I had index and middle finger of right hand holding the plug and with some effort managed to pull up and connect the plug into the socket. This took 2 pulls to seat the plug as far as it would go and I noticed that the locking tab did not seat as it had on the original. Anyways, the plug was certainly not going to drop out so I put everything back in place and then attacked the box itself, removing 2 screws and an end cap to expose the numbered settings inside. As the instructions had said, the unit had been set to no. 3 of 8 but I never take anything for granted!! After replacing the cap and screws I temporarily jammed the unit in the air filter housing area and started the car : no black smoke and no warning lights came on so I was ready for a test drive. Before starting this exercise I had tested the car and as soon as it had hit 30mph in 3rd gear from a standing start I had floored it and made 50mph at 3,000 before lifting off. I was somewhat disappointed to achieve the same figures with the tuning box fitted and again after switching to no. 4 setting. An improvement was felt when setting no. 7 had been reached – even the wife commented on how nice and smooth the C5 was running when she drove it the next day . It has now been over a week since the sweet spot was found and this weekend will be the first long drive with the tuning box installed. I shall post my experience on this later and shall be keeping an eye on fuel consumption too. All the best, John.

Theres a number of different Tuning box's. I personally am not sure what to think of the Pressure Sensor "Adjustment" ...

As for the sensor, theres no need to unplug it at the sensor, as thats a flying lead, and theres a second connection under the top hose outlet, its a YELLOW connection, on the front. This yellow connection goes to the pressure sensor on the rail...

I have a tuning box on mine, However, my one actually connects to the injectors.. It connects in between the car harness and the box. By removing the plug off the injector and connecting the appropite corrosponding connector in line..

Mines been on my car for about 80k now, shes on 247k, and theres no extra sign of stress or wear..

The car still returns 50mpg average, and will pull strongly up any hill, impressivly. Its rather an impressive thing all this diesel thing and tuning them up! God knows what a 3 litre V6 would be like...
