Mpg

Post by cafcbrown »

Hi all, I am new to this forum.

I am looking at possibly getting a xsara 2001 automatic, hdi. 98000 miles 2 owners.
What price should I be looking to pay, and what realistic mpg could I expect to receive.

Are these cars decent? Any known faults!

Many thanks for any help

The price question is a bit like, how long is a piece of string. But if it is in good condition long MOT etc you are looking at around £900 - £1,000 private sale, around £1,250 from a dealer, again sepends on spec etc.

MPG depends on where and how you drive. The auto will steal some of it but you should see mid to upper 30's around town and 50 - 55 on a run.

Generally they are a reasonable car, capable but dull. The ride is slightly softer than most in the class and with the diesel engine they are ok performance wise but again the auto will take the edge off this, not thet there is much edge to take off.

Keeping up with servicing and using a good oil helps and engine wise they are capable of serious miles, 250k+.

The car is very conventional (when compares to Xantias, C5 etc with the hydraulic suspension etc) so most garages will be ok with them.

Although I'm not aware of it being a common fault, problems with the rear beam axle means finding a good second hand one and replacing the unit as a whole rather than individual components.

Could be a very good buy, as they cheap compared with Golfs, Focus etc, and could be cheap motoring. We ran a manual Xsara HDi for 45,000 miles (from 84k to 140K) and servicing and repairs cost £863.94.

Rear axle faults.. being the rear wheels lean in and rub the arch on the inner side is a common xsara 206 and 306 with trailing arm suspension issue.. be wary.. easyer to replace the whole thing but the axles seem to be in short supply so is common. They arent as easy as xantia / bx arms to refurb if they have gone too far.

Check heater matrix for curry smells.. get engine hot and change heater from cold to hot.. dash out job to change it..

Door handles break on outside and passenger interior air vents seem to self destruct..

But ok other wise.
