Finally arrived home Tuesday lunchtime, several hundred pounds poorer. After two decent nights' sleep and waking without a splitting head-ache for the first time in 4 days (minor sunstroke? from standing in the sun on the side the A83 Autoroute for 3½ hours), the brain's firing on four cylinders again.
Firstly, my thanks for all your sympathetic and helpful posts.
I've spent most of yesterday on the phone and t'internet; the reality seems to be that if we want the Xantia repatriated, we would have to pay the difference between the insurance valuation (£660) and the transporter charge (about £1,120), i.e. around £450. Add to that the cost of a transplant (or an engine rebuild) plus a banger to run around in for several weeks for repatriation (10-14 days) and repair and we're looking at around £700-£900 plus days of work to put back on the road a 17 year-old car. Putting sentiment aside she would then have to be replaced at some stage with another relatively low mileage Xantia. So thanks for the offers Paul and Xac but this option doesn't really make financial sense.
While checking market values, I've just come across this
'98 2.1 VSX advertised by a Citroen enthusiast. Only 104,000 genuine miles, FSH, black leather etc., asking price £720, said to be really up together just a couple of minor jobs (A/C sensor fan; front lower suspension bush), but that's to be expected on a 17 year-old Xantia. I'm very tempted despite being over 100 miles away and it not being taxed; in fact so tempted, that I've arranged to go and view on Saturday.
So, some expert advice please:
Specific to a 2.1 VSX (rather than a 1.9sx of the same age), what should I look out for?
VSX means which flavour of active suspension?
What are the fundamental differences between the 1.9 and 2.1 engines of this (1996) vintage?
And the less obvious Pros & Cons of the 2.1?
Does the area around bottom of the driver's side 'A' pillar and the bottom hinge look odd?
I no longer have a Xantia

to go and look at for comparison; please.
I
will tell the whole sorry story of why it took 2 extra days to get home when the dust has settled.
Once again many thanks
