Xantia TU ?

Andy was just wondering.

There were some late model (L and M plates) 405's fitted with a 1.4 TU unit (yes really) :oops: that I saw occasionally but they were quite rare. I expect the XU 1.6 was more economical really as poor TU would have a fair bit of weight to shift compared to a slightly larger engine.

Question is did Citroen ever to this to the Xantia ? I cannot say I've heard of one, although I think the 405's were not UK spec even though they were RHD.


Off topic what was more interesting was the small number (I think I've only ever seen 2 or maybe 3) 'R' plate 405 estates. :) Badged as GLX but had the full GTX spec (lovely grey velour interior and both AC + SR etc etc)

I've seen an R Reg 405 Break Andy... I believe the reason was the 406 Break took a long time to arrive, as did the Xantia Break. It was two years after the Hatch..

I'm not aware of a TU powered Xantia but I do believe there was a 1588cc XU version without power steering. Never imported into the UK though...

Ah OK. That seems odd though on a hydraulic car to not have have a power rack fitted as there's already 90% of the parts already present.

Seemed a very well equipped model at the time, especially as it was near the "end of line" so they tended to fit extra's anyway, reminds me of the last 306's most had a fair bit of equipment fitted.

Yes the 406 Break / Estate did not arrive until late P plate if I remember correctly, and auto's arrived (both 4 and 5 door) around the same time. I *think* it coincided with the switch from keypad to transponder as well but I'm not 100% sure on that. Something tells me there are a few breaks with keypads.

Andy are you sure it was a 1.4 TU and not a 1.6 TU as in the Saxo VTR and the 1.6 VTS twin cam version

405 Malcolm, not 406 :)

I don't think they were UK specification though, not sure if that helps. I do see some listed on my tech data both for 405F and 405N now I've looked. I've not checked ServiceBox yet. I've only seen a couple at the newer shape (405N) though.

Talking of 406's I saw one 406 with a DW8 in it (Spanish Reg) although I could never find any detail on it, sort of suspected it was something the owner did. It came in for brake pads and maybe a tyre nothing more if I remember correctly.

Yes, a rare-ish one to say the least. :)

They also list a 306 carb (TU3) although I've never ever ever seen one. I'd assume its non-UK markets only as given the first 306's I saw were K plate ( you can tell very early ones as they had the 205/309 pedal box ;) ) were too late to be carb'ed given our emission regs at that time. Same I think as only J plate 106's had carb's. I used to wonder where the choke cable lived on these as I could not see any suitable orifice in the dash for them although they state manual choke (thankfully!)

Then again, early build unregistered for a while... :-k

The 1.6 TU without PAS was certainly imported into the UK...

I have seen and shortly driven such an example, and the lack of PAS isnt as bad as you think! its a lot lighter than a Xantia with failed hydro circuit but by far from light :D
