bit of advise xantia td

some time when i start xantia td rev counter doesent work,and engine sounds like bag of nails its a 98td with ecu anyone got any idea

Needle lift sensor on No3 injector.
Look at the injectors, there's a wire and connector coming from the 3rd furthest from the gearbox.
If you've got a happy breakers near you, see if you can pick up a replacement from any late XUD9TE engine (so check 406s, 306s, Xaras etc) with a Bosch pump (Lucas pumps use different incompatible injectors).

thanks mate that sorts out that then could that be why its smokey when starting cause never used to be

Could be. The ECU uses the sensor to adjust the pump timing slightly, if the sensor is playing up the ECU gets it wrong.
Had the same problem when I first got Jenny.
