C5 HDI 2.2 30,000 miles Shaking like the wheeels will fall

Post by mgwanderer »

Hi there I am new to the forum but as usual I come carrying problems.

While driving to the restaurant yesterday, I was joining the motorway and all of a sudden ( as I straightened up and accelerated ) at approx 70 kph the car began to shake like the wheels were coming off( not felt in the steering just the whole car)
Stopped the car and checked there was nothing loose, started off again, same sensation. Took the next exit and returned home very slowly(car shaking violently all the way), changed cars and went to eat.

On returning home tried the car again all back to normal ?????????????

Definitely not the engine as when stopped engine ran fine, as I am supposed to drive to France shortly I need to know what happened any ideas, I thought maybe a drive shaft??? :?: :?: :?:

Many thanks in advance

Inner triax joint on the shafts can cause massive vibration under acceleration if worn, odd to suddenly happen unless disturbed, worth checking the gaiters for damage.

It could be your rear tyres out of balance, had the same problem on mine. If both tyres are out of balance they will come 'in and out of phase' as the wheels rotate independently of each other as when cornering, the relative position they end up in will either increase or cancel the vibration. Check you wheel bolts first though.

Could be binding front brake - disc heats up and warps causing vibration which stops once cooled. usually accompanied by smell of hot brakes or even smoke in worst case....
