Give the autobox a change of ATF as soon as you can

It'll be an AL4 and will need a nice fill of LT71141

What's the current state of play with the HDi Allan? Has Noz made any further progress?

AL4 on a 4 Pot Petrol Jim? I thought the AL4 was only on the TD XUD engines and HDI's... Or was it added to the whole range in S2 cars..

With the auto adaptive reserved for the V6's..

The AL4 was fitted to all S2 autos Paul. So the auto-adaptive was not confined to the V6...

Production of the 4HP14 ended with the S1 in 1997... By then the HP14 was getting a little venerable as it was first seen in 1987 in the BX and Pug 305...

AH WONDERFULL!

Yes I thought the HP14 was getting on a bit. I nearly bought a 305 Auto on a B plate when I was 17.. WISH I had really!

So an AL4 is not a HP20 auto adaptive, but has the same character? Is that right?

I had an early auto SX, changed for a Synergie when need for 7 seats came along, I regret selling it, one of the best all round cars I have owned.

My advice, find plenty of excuses for long trips and enjoy. 8-)

Hi Jim, I have not heard from Norrie for a wee while so I think he is stumped so just went ahead and bought this one as I wouldnt sell the HDI to anyone with the problem it has so I intend to take the bits that can be used on this car and store them and then scrap the shell.I am going on holiday tomorrow so when I come back I will take your advice and replace the gearbox fluid

He shouldn't be Allan, I gave him a lot of food for thought last time we spoke, including a way of working around the problem...

Have a lovely holiday :-D Going anywhere nice?

That's right Paul, the AL4 is made by Siemens and is similar to the ZF HP20 in some ways, both in construction and how it operates. It is a fully-fledged auto-adaptive but how that part compares with and HP20 I can't say as I've never driven an AL4 car...

The AL4 can in some ways be considered the smaller sibling of the HP20. It is intended for smaller engines and a 2.0 petrol is about it's limit. After that the HP20 takes over.. I think why we never saw an auto HDi Xantia was because the AL4 wasn't up to it and the HP20 was a bit of an overkill for it, the HP20 being used on nothing smaller than the 2.2..

There were 406s sold with the 16V petrol 2.0 motor and the 4HP20. I reckon it doesn't suit them so well as the AL4.

Maybe the 16V motor was in a sufficient state of tune the AL4 became marginal so necessitating the HP20. I can see why you think the HP20 didn’t suit them - it's a whopper of a 'box for such a small engine... A bit of a sledgehammer to crack a nut!

It felt mushy, and the shifts more vague.
