Put the stick in second gear, handbrake released, elbows on the seats, then grab it with both hands.
Put phone books under the elbows to shorten the reach if needed.
Turn your face away so as not to be hit when it lets go; as it certainly will with a good wriggle and tug.

A true point. Its quite easy to whack yourself in the face given the force sometimes needed to remove it :twisted: , or whack yourself 'somewhere else' (makes your eyes water! :oops: ) depending on how you're positioned around the lever when attempting to remove.
