Glow Plugs

Post by rjshearer »

What is the general opinion of the forum on the best glow plugs for a citroen xantia td estate 1996 the ones I have at present are ngk and have only lasted about a year.Difficult to start and large puff of smoke when it does start so I presume it is the plugs.Any advice would be gratefully received.[:)]

Beru GN 013 is the plug you want or if you come by any old stock somewhere Beru GN 909.
Get them from http://www.gsfcarparts.com
Bosch plugs are also very good but I can't give you a model number for them.

If you're using NGK plugs they should be Y-923U. If by chance they are 902, you've been given the type for non-turbo engines. Without any doubt, a poll on this forum would be in favour of Beru.

Don't bother with NGK Y-923U's in an XUD. I put a set in mine last week and I've seen 1970's tractors start better than it did with them in. It started distinctly worse than with the 7 year old Lucas plugs that I took out.
I then tried Beru (after a lot of messing) from GSF and it starts like a newun.
If you're changing them yourself, be very careful when doing the one behind the fuel pump that you don't knock the coolant pipe going into the head down there. As I found, it will break off very easily if knocked with a spanner. Its also a right pain in the backside to change.

Yeah lol I've got to do my glow plugs soon. Haynes describes access on 'some models' ie bosch pump models as 'extremely limited'. You know when Haynes describes access as extremely limited then you're in for a nightmare.

If I were doing it again I'd try and use a deep offset ring spanner on it but I'm not sure theres even enough room to get one of them on it.

I used a 1/4" socket set with a universal joint to get the hard to reach plug out on mine.
