I am seriously considering the purchase of 1237cc Renault 5 of 1989 vintage. Between the early seventies and the late nineties, I owned several of both generations and I am keen to have another "simple" car to go with the XM which is far from simple. Since my last R5 was actually bought new in 95, it is a very long time since I had much to do with the maintenance of them, so advice would be gratefully received.
In most 5s rust is the big issue and this one looks remarkably rust free. There doesn't appear to be any corrosion around the windscreen, on the tailgate or the front wings. I will get under it and have a good look there as well, but are there any key areas to inspect that I might not be aware of?
Mechanically, it seems to have had a recent brake service and it is quite low miles. Does this engine use a cam belt and what would be the likely cost of replacement with water pump? I shall endeavour to do as much servicing as I can, but that would be beyond my capabilities at this time.
Any other help will be appreciated.

Dear Ragger,
Hi-there,
I may be wrong, but if I remember correctly, these engines are all " over head valve " push-rods and tappets. With a small timing chain from the crankshaft to the camshaft with tensioner to keep the chain tight. Waterpumps were usually fitted right next the radiator, with some fan blades on normally.
The same set up as the 1256cc Vauxhall Viva engine.
I hope this helps,
Vince,
