ABS is supposed to fail safe but my ancient XM's ABS would let the brakes off and pulsate when approaching a junction to do a left turn. I have discovered a broken sensor wire which was making contact in a straight line but was losing contact briefly when braking and turning left slightly which the controller must have interpreted as a wheel skid.
Replacing the sensor has cured the problem entirely.
