The good news and the bad news

Post by rory_perrett »

First the good news Xantia has just passed MOT 1st time. Couple of advisories for corrosion on the hydraulic pipes at the back, might have to do a bit of a clean-up and repaint. So that’s nearly 28,000 miles since the last MOT and apart from oil and filter changes that’s, 2 front tyres £63.50, 1 litre of LHM £5.40, 4 light bulbs £3.90 (2 front side, 2 indicator), 1 handbrake cable £15.00, 1 set of front brake pads £9.45 and a drop link £10.80 grand total of £108.05 or £139.05 if you include the 2 oil changes. It doesn’t get much better than that .
And now the bad news! Other halves Xsara has been in fine fettle, since its last MOT 10 months ago it has done nearly 5,000 miles and has cost £3.00 in repairs (headlight bulb). Last Friday night a Corsa ran into the back of it when waiting at a junction. Result, damage to rear bumper, hatch back, rear offside quarter rear door, boot floor and a crease in the roof. Repair quote £4,000 car value circa £1,200 so that’s not going to get fixed 
Really bad news, she wants a Honda Civic rather than another Citroen 

A crease in the roof really spells the end. Show her how much the parts are for the Honda

Nice to hear about the Xantia & bad luck with the Xsara.
Has she actually tried a Civic? I thought of having one before I got the C4, it seemed really low rent inside compared to the Citroen and that was the Executive version. You could get her to try the C4 (I know I'm biased!), they are very cheap now.

Yes had a test drive in a couple of 2.2 diesel EX and looked at some C4's. As you say the C4's are looking good value now. I find the fixed wheel centre a bit disconcerting but I guess you get used to it. I have to say the Honda is a nice drive although the styling, both inside and out, is not particularly to my taste, but then its not my car so it looks like its going to be a Civic.

Hope she's good at reverse parking. I heard the back window is a bugger to see out of. I actually like the look of them on the outside, but not the inside.

Had a Honda once when it was only three and a halve yrs. old kept it for a further 13yrs. and only the water pump failed after it turned 87,000 mls. still running perfect at 134,000mls. some rust in the wheel arches by then,
I sold it to a woman, it was written off within 3 months, I felt that I'd let the old bugger down, guilt and sadness followed.

All cars had a fixed wheel centre when I started driving, a tube went down the steering column and out of the bottom of the steering box, it carried the horn and indicator (trafficator) leads - my '54 Hillman minx even had a push button starter. Nothing new under the sun :-D

A Honda?
Nothing wrong with them.

There's the CBR600, or a Fireblade, myself I'd love an SP2, even an SP1 probably even a Firestorm, they're all good. Brilliant performance too. Air conditioning is a bit temperamental and the boots are tiny though. :-D

Neighbours Toyota has been in for four recalls and it's only a year old. Twice for the brakes, don't know what else but he's not a happy bunny.

My cousin's Civic never worked properly from new (she only buys new cars, a Honda every year until this one) never had any satisfaction from Honda. Drives a 308 now.

My Accord was perfect until it got totalled :(
