HELP!!! 110 HDi Clutch Hydraulics

Post by Stunned Monkey »

Hi All,

I'm on a desperate search mission for a clutch/slave cylinder set for my "new" Xantia. Currently sitting in CPS nr Bath having had a new clutch - they're reassembling everythign and the damned clutch hydraulics have died. Pattern parts are unavailable, over £400 from Citroen which is frankly more than the car owes me (not including the clutch!). Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance!
Martin

It didn't die, they buggered it up. It's so easy if you don't know what you're doing.

The hydraulic clutch is normally very reliable and trouble-free but a ham fist during a clutch change is always a big risk.

The slave can be reassembled and bled but it's not easy. I've done it once and resorted to adding a bleed nipple to the elbow that pokes out of the rear of the slave cylinder..

There's a long thread on here about it somewhere. I'll see if I can find it... That'll tell you all you need to know about fixing it...

Spares can be obtained from a scrap Activa or 2.1TD as well as the 110HDi as they all use the same system.

Hi Jim, thanks for the response. I also made a call to my old friends at Triple A Citroen in Brede and Bob mentioned an issue with LUK release bearings not engaging properly, he said they always use Valeo kits because of this. Took a call on the way home and Bob might be onto something because with the slave removed, hydraulics seem to be working just fine.

CPS are going to get a valeo kit in tomorrow

CPS is a long established specialist in this neck of the woods, recommended to me on this very forum :-)

Thanks Mike, that's the one :-D

Thing is, if the release bearing didn't engage properly then the slave cylinder may well have exceeded it's limit of operation and popped apart. It's no problem as they're only clipped together but bleeding will be needed..

This is an exploded view of one:

Hi Guys, okay I have an update now.

Picked up the car at about half 5 on Friday having been relieved of a bag of sand for:

Clutch, OS driveshaft (@ £128 vs about £50 on ebay), ball joints, gear oil, suspension P bushes and an MOT.

The clutch pedal was about 90% air and 10% push with the bite point about 1/4" above the carpet. Given the time and the fact I had to be somewhere, I thought "ho hum" and took the car. Drove to my Mum's in Kent that night and by the time I got there - pretty clear run mostly in 5th - it was getting tough to downshift.

The following day, long story short I bust the gearshfit cable while trying to force it into reverse. The car could get 1/3/5 but nothing "behind" neutral (seen this on a mate's some years ago). RAC man commented that a lot of things hadn't been put back together properly, eg air box held in place by gravity, no jubbly north of the MAF sensor and the plug was loose... A loooong trip home on the tow truck yesterday. Left a note with the car telling them I now have clutch bleeding instructions....!

50p says they try to insist on fitting a Citroen master/slave. I think I'll throw a wobbly if they do....

I'd recommend Edwards and sons, a Citroen breakers who couriered me a part this week, next day delivery.
Ive just posted them in recommended garages etc.
That's if a used part is suitable.
There is also a specialist, I think mobile, on here called the flying clutchman. He responded when I had a clutch problem but I didn't use him in the event.
Best of luck

seeing as someone mentioned my name I thought I ought to comment. It's possible (but difficult) to bleed anything that's got no bleed nipples. I don't think you can neccessarily blame the garage for the problem, as the cylinder may have over-reached when the clutch gave out. I also once had a problem with a 406 (same set-up) where no air had entered the system but the pedal would not return to full height, thereby not giving a full stroke to clutch operation. This can happen in all hydraulic set-ups and is caused by the rear seal in the master cylinder not clearing the fluid inlet when at rest, so not allowing new fluid into the master. OK till you put a new clutch in, when the system needs to push twice the distance.

Thanks for the replies however

1) The clutch didn't give out, in fact it still worked fine holding the power - it just juddered like crazy (car had lived in London so no doubt had lots of use!).
2) Pedal travels to the top still but feels like a very weak spring till you get to the last inch. I'm familiar with hydraulic clutches and this one feels like it has 50/50 air and fluid in it.

sounds like it has air in it, but could be the same problem I mentioned.
