1994 xantia 1.9td non a/c alternator

Post by bill hughes »

Hi All can anyone talk me through removing my alternator as the Haynes book makes it sound complicated, I live in France (the land of citroens ) and garages out here think we are all millionaires or stupid, I am confident about renewing the brushes but would appreciate any advice about getting the alternator off the car Many thanks

That has the HP pump under the altinator??

With a manual tensioned... get the car on top setting.. remove the arch liner. . There's two 6mm Allen bolts securing the tensioned one in the middle of the tensioned puppy perhaps behind a small cover. . Undo. hem then there's a third 6mm Allen bolt at the bottom end of the tensioned arm. . Screw it upwards this then lets the tension off the belt. .

Then there's one 13mm nut and bolt at the top of the altinator and under it a 24mm long bolt that it pivots on. . Disconnect the battery remove the cables to the altinator.. undo the upper 13mm bolts and swing the altinator forward. . Undo the 24mm bolt don't worry.. it does not need to come out all the way the left "foot" of the altinator is like a C cup and lifts off after moving the lower bolt farest to the left. . The altinator might be tight on the mounting spacers .. just give it a forward backward wiggle while lifting. .

Thanks a lot Citroen xm yes! the hp pump is under the alternator, I take it the 3rd 6mm on the end of the tensioner arm is the one you use to retension it having put the alternator back on the car, with your help I feel confident to give it a go, many thanks,

many thanks to citroen xm, with yours and youtubes help I've renewed the brushes in my alternator, the only thing that puzzled me was that I could only find 2 allen bolts for loosening the belt tensioner, 1 which was in an elongated slot and the other which screwed upwards to slacken the belt, also I left it running for 5 mins or so and the alternator seemed quite hot although the belt does not seem to be too tight, not sure if this is normal, thanks again

If its like the earlier 306 tensioner, there's one hex bolt in that elongated slot as mentioned and the other is inside the tensioner 'wheel' itself, they only want undoing a couple of turns anyway then the bottom bolt is the one you use to adjust the tension.

Did you have to take the oil filter off for clearance ?
