Spanners for french cars

Post by charentejohn »

Just a thought, having taken my alternator off recently and hearing of problems with acessa to the timing and accessory belt area.
Being In France I found a set of these (a lot cheaper than this lot but not as good quality admittedly) http://www.castorama.fr/store/Jeu-de-5- ... ction=jump" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Basically they are like a socket welded to a bent bar, needs to be the ones drilled through so a bolt can pass through the 'socket' bit. If not they can't tighten nuts on long threads because like a socket they run out of room.
A bit like an offset spanner but tend to have a longer reach in.
Could be one of the secret tools needed for french cars ? A socket and bar is too bulky for the space, a spanner does not reach around the obstructions.
May be available in the uk ? a good addition to the toolbox.

I know there are a couple of jobs on a 2cv where they are brilliant , but generally don't do anything a decent socket set can do on a modern.

Not easy to find in the UK, usually the Facom set and they aint cheap! I picked up a couple of sets in the supermarket a few years ago but they are of the same sort of quality as a set of asda spanners ( pretty useless) Will prob get some better ones on the way to Spain this year.

i would think they will get in a tighter space than a ratchet with a deep socket on,

gooogly search came up with

Good to see that they are available in the UK, but the same scary price as they are here for a proper set.
Mine only cost about £12 for 14 sockets, not brilliant but good to have. Mine are the hex shaped interior rather than the 'serrated' ones, tend to get a better grip on sound nuts, especially if the sockets aren't top quality so a bit of play is not serious.

I have also seen clever hinged ratcheting spanners but again expensive http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B006ZL8DUC/r ... wo=&hvqmt=" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; They would be useful on some jobs but I don't do enough to justify buying them.
Like a friend said, he is only sorry he has all the tools he bought over the years because there is so much clever stuff at the moment but he can't justify buying them. :(

those spanners come up with the Lidl or Aldi badges on them every so often -and well worth the money! Just as long as you dont use them to crack the nut or do up to silly torque they are great for the likes of the top rear bolt on the timing belt cover or the A panel screws on a 2cv
