Xantia 1.9 TD 1998 – Bosch pump

I have recently changed the fuel filter on my car and have been through fairly deep water. Now when I do my first cold start, the car is lumpy and smokes for about 20 seconds, after this clears it runs okay. Sometimes the rev counter does not work and the engine is very harsh, if I switch off and on again, this will clear and the car runs okay. I have cleaned the brown and yellow connectors that sit on the bell housing also replaced the crank shaft RPM sensor, but it still does the same. You can drive 100 miles all okay, stop then restart engine – rev counter stops working and the engine is harsh, switch off and restart and it’s okay again!

Problems only started after fuel filter change and water incident.

Sounds like the Semi Electroic advance in the fuel pump is playing up ... certainly if water got as far as the fuel pump!!

Could be the needle lift sensor on the injector, Jenny had that problem, sometimes she'd start fine, other times she'd sound like a bag of nails.
Replaced the injector and sensor and problem was solved.

Ahh yes Xac, forgot about that on the later XUD....
