Foam air filter for X1.9TD

Unread post by JohnCKL »

I've read that foam air filters by Amsoil and Uni Filter are better than paper and wire gauze like K&N as their websites attest. Anyone tried foam air filters and any improvements?

I've written to Uni Filter in Australia. One Mr. Myles Gooch wrote back to say that Australia doesn't have Xantia 1.9TD, although they have products for Peugeot TDI. Alans, isn't Peugeout TDI air filter element the same as Xantia 1.9TD?

Just want to point out that K&N filters are of cotton, not paper.
As for which is the best one, foam or cotton, I don't know. I only know that the K&N filter in my ZX 16v is better than the standard paper filter.. Foam and cotton filters can be washed in the same way.
Have you checked out others, like Pipercross, Jamex, Ramair, GMR, Dalhelm and so on? Her is a test taken from www.dalhems.com (swedish company). This is a short version of the MIRA-test which was published in Fast Cars June 1996.

For those of you not able to read swedish, here is some simple translations:
Filtermassa=filter material
filtrering=filter capability/effect
Kapacitet=capacity (of "dirt")
Tryckförlust=Pressure loss (High pressure loss is BAD!)
lager=layer
skum=foam
bomull=cotton

Thanks Jarle. Looks like K&N is still in the lead, with highest filtering capability and least pressure loss. Too bad they didn't test Amsoil and Uni Filter, but the other foam filters should represent a good idea of their performance. Looks like foam is not what it is made up to be.
