should I be worried?

Post by dowen »

Hi I have an X reg Xantia HDI 140miles, its a pleasure to drive!
I also have an S type Jag 3 ltr auto, between the two, for everyday driving, I prefer the Xantia. Its more stable, certainly more comfortable, and generally feels more predictable and relaxing to drive.
However, I have an almost imperceptible rumble in (I think the gearbox) that disappears when I put the clutch in. The gear change is crisp, no noises, It doesn't sound like a thrust bearing!
Any ideas? should I start tearing my hair (what's left of it)

No, don't worry, "they all do that sir" when they get to reasonably high mileage. Apparently they'll go on for ever rumbling away. CitroJim knows more..

The beauty of the Xantia is that it has none of that nonsense..

They do indeed...

For years and years and years.

I believe it's wear in the nylon tips on the gear selector forks but have never proved it because I've never got hold of a broken 'box as yet...

Thank you gentlemen, I can give me old Xantia even more respect!
These cars are so underrated, it just goes on and on, rarely complains. Ill treat it to a cam belt when the weather gets warmer!
Unlike the S Type that seems to want to go into limp home mode for the simplest of reasons!

It does sound as though your Jag is rather redundant!

Yes, that's the Xantia for you Dave...

My V6 is the same. My daily drive and touch-wood as reliable as the day is long... It's been expensive recently needing new discs and pads and a rad but that's unusual. I can't recall when it last needed a big spend on it..

Ought to do the cam belt this year though...

No DMF rubbish fitted here to these 2.0 8v units!!

Its quite possibly the release bearing, according to the AA repair department, a lot of the 110 HDi Pull Clutch's release bearings fail prematurely...

In comparison to the mondeo jag, the Xantia well worth the fix of what ever it may be...

The S-type is based on the Lincoln, Paul, no the Mondeo.

Its a Ford Transmission , a while back I took it to Jag with a wonky 4th and 5th and was quoted £3000, they said it was sealed and couldn't be fixed!
So with the help of the internet dropped the valve box and replaced a $7 spring! + atf and filter about £80. So I wasn't going to pay for Jags Italian marble and pot planted waiting room! Rob dogs the lot of them
The V6 Xantia compared to the S type is faster, more predictable, more stable at higher speed. While the mpg is similar, everything is peanuts by comparison.
I've told them all this on the Jag forum, with outrageous response!

I thought it was the X type that was based on the Mondeo floorplan. The first time I saw an S type I was struck by how similar it was to the Rover 75.

My youngest grandson's other granddad, who died just over a year ago, had an S-type and I did consider buying it from his widow - went to WBAC.thieves in the end and your account there makes me glad I never touched it.
