Peugeot 406 Coupe 2.2 HDi Engine Woes

Post by Geoff Lebowski »

Put briefly, my friends auxiliary belt snapped and caused the engine to stop. I've not seen it myself but have been told the cambelt has snapped also. Not sure if this is so but the engine won't turn over - according to the garage.

I've been asked if I'm interested in tackling the job myself, but I will decline, based on the fact it looks a more complicated machine than the 2.1 XUD11BTE.

So, if there is a likely outcome, what would it be? Do the rockers break up prevent the valves hitting pistons like they do in the XUD11? Or is this likely to be a head rebuild job with bent valves?

Don't know if they do on the 2.2 its a rather more complicated engine then the 2.0 8 valve which does have sacrificial rockers, sounds as though something has broken. I have one of these in a C5 and I'm not sure I would like to tackle an overhaul.

I bet what`s happened is the aux`belt debris has wrapped around the crank pulley, entered the timing cover and got caught up with the cambelt. As said this engine is designed to snap the rocker arms in the event of camshaft failure,so the cylinder head does not have to be removed for a valve job. If you have already pulled a XUD apart it should not be a problem for you.Basically its a cam belt job, plus eight rocker arms, locking the cam and crank is similar to the XUD.

Do you know for sure if the rockers break on this engine Oldpug? My friend is basically deciding what to do with the car based on whether it's a head job off or not. I guess the only way to find out is remove the cam cover.

The ones in the 2.1 were a cast steel, but looking at Citroen Service they look like pressed components and look unlikely to break to me. But who knows what hi-tech fandangled mechanisms they design these days.
Thanks for your input so far, I'd be grateful for any more info if anyone knows these 2.2s

2.1 rocker assembly

It's item 3 that would break on the 2.1, but item 2 on the 2.2 doesn't look like it would

[quote="Geoff Lebowski"]Do you know for sure if the rockers break on this engine Oldpug?

That`s the idea of this design, I`ve seen it happen, the rockers were replaced and the head was NOT removed....BUT??....nothing is for sure when something unexplained happens to an engine,as in this case. Two choices? attempt to repair the car or get rid of it.
First you want to find out why the aux`belt failed, tensioner?crank pulley?pas pump?etc, then confirm that it was aux` belt debris that caused the cam belt to fail.
There are a lot of "IFS" to this job,it could end up a lot of work and expense but I suppose it all depends on whether the car is worth it.

You mean 2 camshafts :)
The rockers on this are the same style as on the 8v HDi & are desinged to break before bending valves. I cant remember the set up 100% on the DW12 but you may need to remove the injectors to get the cam cover off, this can be a big problem on this engine.
