Xantia hissing sound from rear brakes

Post by Nikolaymk »

Hi,
While driving on A406 today I had to stop from 40mph to a standstill. When the car was coming to a complete stop there was a long hissing sound from the rear. It's never happened before but reappers on complete stops from speed.
I believe it's coming from the rear brakes but not sure - does anybody have any idea? I haven't had any worn brake lights on the dash.
Many thanks.

Its quite normal to hear a momentary hiss from the brake (dozeur) valve on releasing the pedal after hard use, but this shouldn't last more than about a 1/4 of a second.
Its caused by the returning high pressure oil being forced through the restrictions of the valve
Longer than this could possibly mean trapped air in the brake pipes going to the calipers, try bleeding the brakes.

thanks. I had it looked at and it turned out the pads were so worn, the metal part was in contact with the disk.

Gosh! your Xantia must be very high mileage to have worn out it's rear pads.

It's only done 52000 - What's the normal mileage for the rear pads to wear out? Bear in mind that most of these miles are in north london traffic though...

Rear pads on hydraulic Citroens last a huge number of miles. The amount of work the rear brakes do depends upon the type of loading you put on the car. My own Xantia has done 65K miles, many of them towing a caravan, but the pads are virtually unworn. You could have calipers which have seized.

Presumably Nikolaymk has a hatchback, its rear pads are much smaller compared to the estate pads, also the front discs and pads on a 2.1 estate are much larger than those on the smaller engined hatch's and so much more powerfull which goes to aleviate the pain an the rears somewhat.
So not that surprising your rears are still healthy looking John, especialy if they are the originals, hard as rock, probably the discs that are suffering.
Anyroad up, I don't describe the metal to metal noise from brakes as a hiss, scrape yes.

Yep, my car is a hatch and it did hiss. The sound was exactly the same as the one coming from the blower on max. That's why I didn't think of rear pads first.
Many thanks
