Recommended Mobil oils

Post by qprdude »

Just thought I'd bung this page up from my old company. It should show the Mobil product for your car. If nothing else, it might point to a cheaper alternative for some owners.
I'm retired now so I have no interest in sales, it's purely for info.

That'll come in handy 8-)

I usually stick to Total, the ECS for the diesels with particulate filters and 0w-40 for the ones without.

Mobiles low sulphur oil seems to be called ESp 5W-30.

I was always surprised at how much resources went into research and development. Not just for Automobile engines, but for machine lube , turbine and coolant products. The money spent is astronomical, but competition is so strong that every company is trying to get a little step ahead. I'm of the opinion that you get what you pay for mostly, although it depends on how you use the car, and it's age and how long you want to keep it.
If for instance, I had an old Ford Escort as a runabout, I would be sourcing the cheapest lube I could find, as long as it reached the minimum spec.

The problem is you don't know how much is marked up, there could be two products from the same company, one given as a premium oil and the other as a regular oil, and they could be almost identical, but one costs far more than the other just down to the way it is marketed.

Just because it costs more doesn't instantly make it better, companies may chose a lower markup just based on that they'll hopefully sell more at that price. I've looked on many different places about the oil for my car, and I got a lot of different people stating about you should use X brand. But there is often no real explanation of why X Brand's oil is better than Y's.

Even so, I would prefer to go for brands that I know are in that area of expertise, over the own brands that you can get for example in halfords (even though Halfords probably do source theirs from one of the big players).

Halfords own brand oils are from Comma, as are Asda's and Tescos..

Oh yes I remember seeing someone saying that previously :) I always think of Comma (maybe incorrectly) as a minor player due to them being based near when my family in the uk live and having a friend who previously worked for them lol. :)

It sounds too familiar to Commer, and we had a Commer camper when I was a kid.. UGH.

Oi, nothing wrong with the Commer van. I used to drive a big one in London in the late 60's early 70's for a telephone cable testing company. Great for negotiating the London traffic, although it was a dream compared to today's nightmare. Loved the big handbrake lever on the steering column. The Commer was virtually indestructible. ( I know, I tried hard enough) :-D

The mark up is massive in the UK. I can buy Mobil 1 at Walmart for $28 which works out at 17 quid! Normal no name fully synthetic can be purchased for just under $20, we pay a lot more in the UK....

You think the markup in the UK is massive, over here 6L of Mobil 1 New Life costs ~£130 vs ~£50 in the UK.

We had the typical "BT" Commer van, the one most people know. It was ok, until it decided it really wasn't indestructible and destroyed it's distributor in 1987 Hungary, leaving us trapped there for 4 days. We lived in it in a Lada dealers' yard with his Alsatians running free at night until the AA European cover sorted out our train tickets back to UK and we left it there. It was shipped back by the AA. We had it fixed, and it threw it's big ends 200 miles later, so it wouldn't have got us home anyway..
