Tyre, too wide, too tall or too narrow for my C5 II?

Post by begins »

Hi all,

I’ve this thought the 205/55R16 tyres are looking relatively smaller on my C5 II. The default size supposedly to be 215/55R16.

So in my next change, I’m contemplating to go with one of the following sizes (Forget about the tyre upsize ratio) and I need your advice and comment:

1. 215/60R16
Is this too tall for the C5?

2. 225/55R16
Is this too wide for the C5?

3. 205/60R16
Is this too narrow for the C5?

Thank you very much.

Mine is wearing 215/60/16s, with no problems. The difference in height isn't much more than that between new and end of life tyres due to treadwear.

I'm not quite sure why you would change from the standard size of tyre?

I realise that 215.55.16 are not the cheapest but they are what should be on and as such are the correct size.

I'm sure you know that rolling radius being different will have an effect on your speedo and gearing. It could make your speedo overread by more or actually under-read.

Also some insurance companies will frown at a change in tyre size and they will need to be informed should you be running a different size than standard. Insurance companies can try anything to get out of funding a claim, I wouldnt let that be a factor.

IMO 225s would be very wide for the width of a C5s alloy wheel. They would look balooned and probably give a soggy feel. Some C4s have a type of alloy wheel fitted, they use 205.60.16. 215.60.16 would be at risk of making the speedo under read, as I find them spot on as normal.

When I bought this used C5 II, it has already been fitted with 205/55R16 including the spare tyre. 215/55R16 is very uncommon here and this explained of its high price (demand versus supply). Insurance companies here are not interested in your tyre size too.

205/55R16 and 205/60R16 are far more common and so is 215/60R16. The fender in a C5 II is kinda large…and make the tyres look smaller. So I thought by installing a bigger tyre would actually blend in nicer. Not interested in going for 17” as it will be expensive to find Citroen PCD rims over here.

Unless, there is a better way to close the gap…if you know what I mean.

Thank you.

Ah, I didn't realise your location, that does explain the move away from the normal size. :)

I would go for 205.60.16 in that case, fitted to the C4s here so they cant be too far wrong.

I would certainly stick to what the manufacturer tried and tested.
Volvo S80 D5.........
C5 2.2HDi Exclusive 2003 manual (now gone).
2009 Renault Megane, the misses drive.
Had a 1988 BX 19TRS Auto many moons ago.
Forgive any spelling mistakes, it's the phone not me.

Thanks!

Guess what? In the end, I went with 215/60R16 and so far so good :-D . Will post some photos later.

a quick look at the numbers and the difference in rolling radious is only just over 10mm, which will in effect bring the built in speedo overread down by a tiny margin,
215/60 has a 129mm sidewall,
225/55 has a 123.75mm sidewall
205/60 has a 123mm sidewall
the std tyre being a 215/55 has a 118.25mm sidewall,
Numbers based on the profile of the tyre as the percentage of width,

all new cars have a degree of over read built in to the system, some as much as 10% but more often 5-6%, i used to test the cars at the garages out of my own curiousity by a steady drive on a straight flat road with the gps on the dash (gamin etrex) and compare the differences, 3 cars from the same company with consecutive vins, all the same spec All gave different readouts,
My 16v bx over reads on std 14" wheels and tyres by 6mph, when i put the 17's on it, the difference was down to 1.5mph, was amazing when you were travelling at a TRue speed on the road How much you'd overtake (dual carriage way)

this site is handy when working out the differemces
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

as citroenmad said, i've known of companies refuse a pay out on the policy due to non std tyres fitted, But! i think there were more mods. done than just the tyres, but by the letter of the policy any item fitted to the car that isn't Standard equipment is classed as a modification! can be as petty as a gear knob, different radio, upgraded leather interior, if it gives them a reason to refuse the policy they will!!

apologies if its all old infoi to you all and a smidge of a thread hijack but if its useful to one then thats ideal! ;-)
