Xsara hdi auto box problems

Post by Dreezey »

Hi there, recently bought a xsara estate auto after my 306 estate died of rear axle failure.
Drove it around for 2 weeks with no problems at all, then suddenly it went into limp home
Mode (sport and snow lights). Started with it happening on hills, or accelerating, but now (4 days later) it does it on straight roads, at a constant speed and at any point, quite violently at times.

Managed to get a garage to look at it today, (£67 to read faults!) and it threw up 2 intermittent faults -
- pressure regulation fault
- output speed sensor fault

They've quoted me £500 for new solenoids and an oil change, so £567 in total, which may not even fix it, is this a decent/average price? What are the chances of the problem going away?
I knew auto boxes were expensive when they went wrong but surely that's too much? Ill be bankrupt by next month at this rate!

Any help or info would be appreciated

I guess this is an AL4 'box..

Whilst I'm not that familiar with them I know the pressure regulation solenoids are a regular cause of problems and their replacement should fix it. The output speed sensor fault may be a red herring but worth replacing whilst the 'box is in bits..

To be honest, £500 to do the job is not a bad price at all for a job that takes some skill and attention to detail... I just hope they're up to it as most garages sensibly farm such work out to specialists.

But.. Await a comment from Addo as he's well clued up on the AL4 'box... He may have some other comments.
