xantia bumpy ride

Post by gordy »

Hi guys,
have a xantia 1.9td sx 1996 p reg on 74k only had car a few months but feel that the ride is very very bumpy.
On start up car levels out within 20 secs ie back drops then rises then drops, then front drops and rises, presume this is normal. drive on A class roads that are windy and uneven but car seems to bump and bounce considerably (but not roll). car has staggered history but has had frequent oil changes (have receipts) engine is perfect and so smooth and mpg is stagering (50 mpg) Due its 72k service now but will have to find independent garage as main dealer price is £600 inc timing belt(wow).
Question is how do you know what spheres to change to fix ride problem?
Thanks for any help you could give

Hi Gordy -
Sounds to me that all your spheres may be near flat.
To prevent a catastrophic garage bill - I'd start replacing the accumulator sphere - the sphere that's fitted low front on the engine block itself.
Then take it from there.
Specialists garages exist - who can regas the spheres in-situ. An economical alternative to consider. The cost compares to a full set of new spheres - except you don't have to pay the labour replacing the spheres.
My guess approx £25 pr sphere regassed - which is approx the same as new spheres (each) from aftermarket dealers - like GSF.
Depending on your DIY skills/facility level - it's in fact easy to replace the spheres as DIY.
Oh - cheeeeese [:p]
I forgot the most important :
Try the Citaerobics Image - to vent out any air from the suspension. May remove some/most of the strange suspension behaviour.

I push down on each corner of the car while the engine's running, if it's pretty solid then either the sphere is flat or the car is at an incorrect height which would mean a problem with the height correctors.
I've just bought two rear spheres for my parent's Xantia, the rear end's gone solid. Driving over a crack in the road is painful. Should be fun fitting them.
Hope this helps until someone cleverer gets to you.
James
