Decided as I'd done a long run and was going on another today to check the current fuel economy on my 1994 Xantia 1.9d
I had filled up the car a few days before my long run and did around 25 miles around town. I then did a 440 mile run in two journeys with an overnight stop in between in the bad weather last weekend.
I then drove round town last week doing another 40 miles or so.
Total mileage was 512. It took 44 litres to refil the tank so my calculations:
44 litres = 9.7 gallons (according to an online convertor)
512 divided by 9.7 = 52.8 mpg

Not bad going. I have absolutely no idea what the fuel economy of my Xantia is, I don't feel like I'm spending too much money on it. Though I've only been driving twice in the last 2 weeks

Sounds pretty good, you have to be driving it a bit gently to get that consumption.

I usually do. I have a general rule that I don't go over 3000 revs in any gear if I can help it. In fifth at motorway speeds that equates to a maximum of around 65 MPH.Peter.N. wrote:Sounds pretty good, you have to be driving it a bit gently to get that consumption.

I definitely get better consumption in the summer months though. I did the same journey last May/June time and set off with an indicated less than three quarters of a tank of diesel on the gauge and got back home without putting any more in. I wish I'd started with a full tank and worked it out on that occasion, although it was probably the desire to get back without putting any more diesel in that made me drive even more economically

It's 60 mph and 2000 rpm for me and yes, the ambient and engine temperature makes a lot of difference. You will find a picture of the readout on my 406 last year on here somewhere, returning from the north of Scotland where I got 67.3 mpg over 650 miles, average speed 50 mph but it was about 28C.
