Xantia power steering pressure.

Post by Lenny »

Afternoon,

Can anybody tell me what pressure the power steering of my '98 2.1TD Xantia runs at?

I had a problem with a leaky pipe earlier this week and I've had a local hydraulics company do a repair on it but I'm not sure if I should consider it a temporary or permanent repair.

The pipe in question was the one from the pump to the steering ram. A proper long thing with a rubber bit incorporated in it towards the front.
(Part number from Citroen is allegedly 4023H6 and obsolete according to the local dealer).

The bloke that repaired it has replaced the steel pipe after the rubber section with copper pipe using a brass fitting to the rubber. He said that the brass fittings aren't the strongest but that it should be more than up to the pressure that the rubber section could handle.

Any thoughts?

The steering is less of pressure but more of FLOW rate... Im not an expert on connection strengths, but it should do the job fine.. but before feeling completely releaved Id wait for a couple of more opinions...

Well, so far so good.
I've done about 20 miles of own driving followed by a run of 50 miles last night and no problems so far.
It's not easy to drive with all my fingers crossed though.

Well, there's copper pipe and copper pipe (brake pipe? kunifer?). My initial feeling would be that it's only a temporary repair, until some expert pronounces otherwise.

You could have a word with Plaides, who makes up replacement pipework for exactly such as yours. There'll be references on the Forum, and a tel number somewhere. IIRC, Falling-Out-With-my-car had a similar pipe made up by Plaeides withing the last year, and reported this on the Forum

Ouch, that is HIGH pressure. It equates to 2205 psi.

It is high James. Once upon a time I tried to repair the rubber section thinking it was volume rather than pressure there.

The subsequent explosion of pipe and LHM was umm, rather spectacular

Christ on a bike. Pretty high pressure then.

Better keep driving with crossed fingers then. :-D

I managed to speak to an extremely helpful chap at Pleiades earlier and he reckons it'll be fine. 8-)

To be honest Lenny, if it's not gone bang by now or bled like a stuck pig I think you can be reasonably sure it's OK :)

The extremes of pressure are only there when actively steering and most pressure is developed at full lock so if you want to really test, haul the wheel around to full lock and hold it there for a bit. You'll hear the pump straining.

If it survives that then you can happily uncross all your fingers!

It's in for a timing belt today so I'll give this a try tomorrow to put my mind at rest.

Cheers.
