Post by citroenxm »

Hi all...

Your opinions, had a frantic call this week, friends with a 1997 P reg Xantia estate have lost their Indicators, Hazzards, and HRW..

At first - suprisingly - I drew a blank, then today I thought Ignition Switch!

Yes???

I wonder if this link might help? How did the problem first show up?

It was the ignition switch that failed and gave the same problems on my 1997 1.8 Petrol.

That was the cheapest repair it ever had...

As a further investigation on this, I had a quick look last night at this...

I discovered though, that the Hazards didn't work AT ALL, there was no light on the switch, warning for on or not.. I tried another ignition switch did the same thing..

However, I pressed the Hazard swith with the ignition on and indicator on and then they worked, pressed it again they stopped.

So its either the hazard switch or something else. Dont ask me which way the Hazard switch is set for the indicators to work, theres no warning illumination...

Would this be a Hazard switch itself???

Based on the original fault, it would be odd if the hazard switch would 'kill' all the other electrics affected. I would guess that there is an open circuit somewhere that is causing the problem, and I think that, when you switched on the hazards and the indicators you somehow found a path around that open circuit. I would suggest finding where, on the circuits, the HRW, Hazards, and indicators come together (without affecting anything else (unless anything else IS affected)), and then see where the hazard switch bypasses the main circuit. If there is such a place, that is where I would start looking (on the main circuit).

The hazard switch is a recognised problem Paul.
Operate it a couple of dozen times and it will probably correct itself.
failing that a good clean up or chuck it and fit a replacement.

i agree with Steve
and maybe the heated screen is a red herring and a completely separate fault ( tail gate to body wire's ???? ),
especially as she's quite elderly now being a P reg
