Always/Sometimes/Just Once?
Straight away/After x miles from turning the Cruise Control on?
Does turning it off clear it?
Is the Check Engine Light on?
Best to get the codes read too.

If it happens always, straight away after turning the cruise control on, then it could just be a short somewhere, or it could just be a co-incidence and you catalytic converter is knackered. Won't know without far more information/diagnosis :)

The codes start with a P eg. P0420

Anti Pollution Fault covers many codes, so needs to be hooked up to an OBDII Reader/Lexia to get them. ESP/ASR would be unrelated to Anti Pollution. Does it also come up with the "ESP/ASR Not functioning" message at the same time?

Given the limited information, I think it could potentially be an electrical load issue, how about a test, turn as many things on in the car as possible (without cruise control), e.g. rear heater, AC, radio, lights (interior and exterior), fogs, put something in the 12V socket, turn on the cig lighter etc as much as possible at the same time.

Shows no codes, now, even after limp mode

I had a 2.2 mk1 that did this. Anti pollution fault can be anything, and the ESP/ASR fault is because the car has turned off because of the first fault.
In my case it turned out to be a electro valve that was faulty. It caused the boost pressure to be too high somewhere. Usually when on cruise at 60 and I hit a slight hill. Got worse over time. The garage that fixed it used a pressure tester to find the fault. The dealer that looked at it first was convinced it was the turbo so watch out.

Really? Hoorah!
Driving 10miles to work and doing short journeys for callouts my mk1 2.2 did 34.4 mpg.
When I first got it I saw 49.something after a motorway trip. It never hit that again.

Just did 38.4 from alfreton to chesterfield, not an economical journey, usually 24/27, strange that turbo pipe affects mpg

wow 34.4, that's pretty bad. I'm worried 'cos at the mo' mine's struggling to hit 40. Over the last few years it's been consistently around 43 but high forties on a run :? I think the best was 50.5 back from Luton to Durham and back - yes feather throttle too and don't brake for roundabouts (just coast for as long as poss). I won't go below 56mph on m'ways and dc's though. Cruise on at about 65ish.
I want to do a vacuum check in the future too - get the alarms if I floor it too much as well.
