C1 dificult gear change

Post by citronut »

a friend of my daughters has a 56 plate C1 manual petrol 30ish K on the clock,

dont know exactly what spec yet

she went to work fine no prob's, then on setting off to take boss's kids to school it firstly jammed in gear, then once cleared was almost impossible to select gears,

later it drove fine again is this gear selector cables/clutch or cable or a gear box issue

I'm on the c1oc, the earlier c1 and 107 and aygos have known clutch problems. The later ones post 09, the facelift ones have uprated clutches, 190mm valeo rather than 180mm which are much improved and are a direct replacement for the smaller one. It is highly unlikely to be the gearbox itself, but I think the cables are adjustable. See here. There is a thread dedicated to clutch issues, they are very intolerant of poor driving styles, such as holding the car on the clutch at junctions etc. Clutch issues are the biggest issues on the citybug trio.

The Clutch pressure plat is held to the outer casing with 3 steel straps, one of them snaps or the rivet fails, this causes the clutch to not clear properly, so the gears become hard to select, if not impossible. We fit Exceedy clutches from GSF, they seem very good compared to other makes, and we haven't had a faulty one yet.
Probably replaced about 20 with this problem.

I've heard the clutches are a bit weak too, I'm pretty sure the very newer models have the larger one anyway (before it was Diesel only I think?) and its a straight swap.

I seem to think its a Yaris or other Toyota small transmission so it will be cable change, probably you'll find there's no adjustment on it but to be fair that transmission should be quite strong generally anyway.

The only other things I know about them is the water pumps are a bit weak (although very easy to change) and I seem to remember someone saying something about the tappets, possibly they did not have any shims or something ie you had to replace the buckets (!) but I'm not sure, guess if its running nice and not making noises its OK. :D

Indeed, I was going to say until I read you'd already seen it!

Seems that these came out of the factory on a regular basis with the clutch very poorly adjusted. Every 107/C1/Aygo I've driven (mine, three pool car C1s at work, and two hire cars) has had the cable way too tight resulting in a pedal that has to be almost right out before you get any bite from the clutch. Reckon this may well be why my ones clutch release bearing disintegrated after 50 odd K miles - clutch itself was still OK, just the release bearing went.

Was told by Peugeot when I mentioned it at several services and they kept telling me it was non-adjustable! Only found the adjuster completely by accident one day.

Reckon I must have adjusted about an inch of tension out of the cable before I had the correct amount of free play...

I adjusted the last one, haven't touched this one yet, but am going to, the bite is quite high. I've not looked at it because my right hand is knackered and can't grip with it.
