Xantia TD diesel smell.

Post by cc101 »

Hi all, I have a diesel smell when starting, I can't see any leaks though, any obvious places? Seems to smell around the fuel filter but everything seems dry!

Cheers, Chris.

Hi Jim, I replaced all the leak off pipes last month as the end cap had gone.

Cheers.

Chris, check the return fuel line where it runs down the bulkhead and under the front subframe. I've known them to perish..

In fact, it's a case of carefully checking all the rubber bits really...

Also Chris, are all the injectors dry or is one or another a little wet? Sometimes they need a little tighten down on their unions and themselves. I've also known them weep from where the two halves of their bodies are screwed together.

Check too the delivery pipe unions on the back of the pump for dampness and if exposed, the stop solenoid too...

Thanks Jim will have a good root around, all injectors looked dry, could be something to do with the freezing weather we're having!

I'd take a guess its the return piping (as already mentioned) or possibly the pump as I'd expect if any leakage was present in the feed especially near the filter or after it (examine base of fuel filter too as fuel is put underneath to heat it in the top of the thermostat housing in cold weather) you'd probably have air ingress and running problems otherwise.

Good to know it was a simple fix. I wanted a couple of these a while back and ended up buying a small length of leakoff pipe as it came with two caps, as I could not see the caps on their own. I wanted it for a vacuum blank though and the savings ofset the small cost of the pipe.

I've had those end bungs perish quickly on a couple of mine. First Xantia I ended up having a bit of pipe with a bolt covered in PTFE tape screwed in the end. The other I had a length of leak off pipe, folded over the end a couple of times and stuck a couple of cable tied around. Both have lasted a lot longer than the bungs!
