Its a thingy on right side of engine, with a rod and ball joint on it, think thats what its called anyway
Can it be faulty and affect mpg
C5 2.2 hdi 2003
C5 2.2 hdi 2003, called it oliver reed, drinks like him :(
Good on fuel now, lol.

Its not a swirl chamber, they are in the cylinder head of an IDI diesel, its a swirl flap the purpose of it being to agitate and direct the air entering the engine - but they don't really make a lot of difference. I have tried everything to improve the economy of my 2.2 but I've given up now.

It is deff not a swirl chamber the point of this device is to create manifold depression eg vacuum as diesels do not have a depression in the manifold to induce egr they have a basic blockage device in the intake system to create a depresion in the intake to induce the exgaust gasses into the intake system.

What can affect mpg, got new oils and filters, used injector cleaner

I have asked the same question. There must be something fundamentaly wrong with the design of the engine, being bigger it should have the potential of a better fuel consumption than the 2.0. if driven gently.
