Thought I'd check this out in case if becomes a major issue...
When I started the 406 this morning, the little gear selector display was blinking in the R position despite it being in P. I put it in R then back to P and all was good again - solid dot in P. Sitting at the lights later on, put it in P and the little dot was blinking again, this time in the correct position (P), as opposed to being solid?
The car is selecting everything and driving normally (at the moment!)
Any ideas?

Yep, that's a known problem Luke and is a slight misalignment on the cable or multi-function switch on the gearbox selector shaft.
Could also be an early indication of the failure of the multi-function switch.
First thing is to check the selector cable adjustment. I don't know how it's done on a C5 but you can get a good idea by ensuring the selector quadrant detents agree with the detents on the gearbox selector shaft. The cable should be adjustable at the gearbox end to make this so...
