smoke and sound

Post by beeplumber »

HI all, I have a noise coming from my near side front wheel, sounds like a fan
does not do it all the time but after I switch off the engine it sometimes runs.

Also today I stopped at lights and smoke appeared from under that side.

Has anybody any idea what it is or might be.

many thanks

Mik

A binding brake caliper is often the cause of smoke from a wheel arch particularly on the C5, id imagine the problem may have been present for the xantia also. Are you sure the noise originates from the arch too, most likely cause of the sound would be the cooling fan, are you sure the cooling fan isnt running, Sam

I had the smoke and a lot of noise NSF on Gracie. It turned out to be due to a handbrake cable that sometimes seized. Replacing that cable sorted the problem.

If Mik's car is a Xantia Exclusive HDI, the Eberspächer auxiliary engine coolant heater is the most likely source. It sits in the nearside wheelarch. Given the near freezing temperature of the last 2 days, this will cause the aux heater to activate.
These heaters are wonderful in the winter even though they are sometimes temperamental :-D

Hi electronmirror it is an Exclusive hdi there is a pipe coming from under the wheel arch would this be a flue
outlet as there was a whiff of smoke from there. should I be looking at servicing this heater?

Thanks again

Mik,

It sounds as though your heater is working just fine. Mine will sometimes run for a few minutes after engine switch off producing a little smoke, the heater runs on diesel and is automatic in operation.
There has been a very informative post on this forum about servicing them when they don't work, the usual problem is the small glow plug that fires the burner. If you do a forum search for 'Eberspächer heater' you should find it.

You're lucky to have a working one :-D
