car tax C5

Post by horsedentist »

Well the project C5 2.2 hdi auto was taxed when I bought it a couple of months ago but ran out end of Dec so went to tax it today £250 :( I taxed the manual one that I originally bought (before the belt snapped) that was only £195 how do they justify such a big difference in a years tax. They are both 51plates registered in November 2001, my Ford explorer registered February 2001 4 litre V6 petrol guzzling 4 X 4 that I need for work only costs me £215! Methinks we are being ripped off big time.
Ok I have had my gripe I'll get my coat now :-D

Its done on emissions and the auto puts out more hydro carbons than the auto so they screw you a little harder. :x

The 2002 52 plate 2.2 hdi manual was £195 when taxed last May. Jump to £215 for this year maybe? £250 does make it seem like a large difference between auto and manual with the same engine, even allowing for the price rise.

Sorry to hear about that H-Dentist.
Must say it was one of the reasons I got rid of my C5 a couple of years ago, I could see the writing on the wall re RFL, plus the price of diesel keeping rising and the 2.2 was not very economical. It was also getting to an age when servicing costs were likely to rise. Retirement also tends to focus the mind. But still miss it sometimes.

It is steep on road tax, however as has been said, it goes on emissions and for all the cleaver features on the 2.2, it doesn't prove to be very effiecient. Add on an autobox and you have a high tax band group.

It is slightly odd though. I dont understand why the 2.0HDi 110 is in the £135 a year road tax group but the 2.0HDi 138 is in the £165 group. Its got a fap filter which should help things and its much more economical than the 110. Hmm.

The emmisions of the 16 valve are slightly higher, but not by much, no doubt due to the greater power output.

I note all that has been said but an increase of about 30% over a manual with the same engine seemed a bit steep it would be interesting to see how they actually come by their bands.

Is it not based purely on Co2 now. Not hydrocarbons not any particulate matter, no monoxides or trioxides just co2 I thought.
Given the rising number of diesel engines on the road I wouldn't be surprised if the criteria are changed to exploit the various
different things that come out of diesels for a bit of extra tax revenue. I dont remember the band limits off hand but I think that Band F allows a maximum of 150g/km, thus if you emit 151g/km you are pushed up a band, sam

I believe so. You can find the figures on Parkers Guide.

The driver's handbook gives the emmissions as:

2.0L HDI 110 manual 147
2.0L HDI 110. auto 173

2.0L HDI with P. filter manual 153
2.0L HDI with P. filter auto 165

2.2L P.filter manual 168
2.2L P.filter auto 185

For clarity I believe the first two figures refer to a mk1 2.0 8v 110, whilst the second two refer to a mk2 2.0 16v 138.
I suppose the only logical explanation for the difference in Co2 emissions between the two engines, given that the later
engine has better mpg is that obvisouly being more fuel efficient means better combustion of fuel (higher temps e.t.c),
thus where the less efficient 8 valve throws a portion of un/poorly combusted fuel out of the exhaust as soot and other
particulate/gases (not accounted for by VED), the more efficient later engine combusts more completely producing more
