Crankshaft Position Sensor - DW10ATED Xantia 2.

Post by Spurious »

Well folks, long time lurker here.

I've a small problem, my Xantia HDi is stranded in the sticks and is cranking and not firing. The day before it was starting intermittently when it did start it was running a bit lumpy at idle. A connection to an OBD reader spat out the two following codes - P0340 and P0230.

The first is a malfunction of the crankshaft position sensor and the second is what I think is caused by the first, low pressure in the fuel pump.

Now, the car is stuck in the middle of nowhere and it is a long tow home (more than 100 miles ) and I'm kind of hoping I can fix this on the spot when I go back with a new sensor. Anyone done this on the PSA HDi before? Presumably it's down by the flywheel bellhousing? Any fancy tools needed?

Cheers all :)

First thing to eliminate is the fuel pump in the tank, can you hear it run for a couple of seconds after turning the ignition on without trying to start the car? If not thump the underside of the fuel tank on the offside then listen again for the pump running, if it runs try starting the car, if it still doesn't start then I'd look towards the crank position sensor.

Fuel pump is working, I should have included it in the OP. You can hear it when you turn on the ignition.

Going to chance the sensor, ordered it from my local dealer this afternoon.

Its OK to do in situ...

It sits right under the Water Housing on the side of the head, on the top of the gearbox..

Remove the air cleaner, and scramble some of the cables to the side, and peer under the housing its secured by 1x 10mm nut, I can just get my fat fingers in there to undo it..

Once the bolt is out of the tight squeeze its a further tight squeeze to get the sensor out. At first you think it wont, but it will come from there... Its not an easy thing, rather a fiddle but its possible to do it...

Give yourself pleanty of time to do it...
