Project lowrider

Post by Jeth »

Hey guys, been a while since i wrote here. Thought i'd share my current project car for you :)

I bought an -89 BX with 1.4 TU engine, without any fancy electronics, shell was absolutely stunning! But I've always fancied a 16 valver, so I bought a rusty shell where i could take interior, engine etc.

Heres how it looked when I got it:

Image

I stripped interior and other stuff so I could start getting it back together:

Image

Image

After I got everything stripped, I started doing some noise dampening:

Image

Image

Also electric windows and central locking found their place

Engine got a full rebuild aswell (didn't paint anything tho :P )

Image

Image

As it was getting "ready" i started to search for rims, luckily i found a set, Fondmetal 4000 in 15x7 size with et30 (i have 16mm spacers)

Image

They werent looking good, so i decided to paint them and polish lip

Image

Meanwhile i already had driven car a few weeks, so it was working well :)

Image

Image

A friend of mine painted the rims, pretty unusual colour ;)

Image

As you can see, front sits way too high compared to rear, so I had to do something about it..

Modified front suspension a bit (original in pic, didn't take one from modified one)

Image

As that -4cm i got from that modification wasn't enought:

Image

Image

Image

Much better! :D

Later on i got morettes and sideskirts on, drove it few months looking like this:

Image

Current driving height is this:

Image

At the moment im not driving it as of winter, but in the summer i'll start scratcing bottom of it..again..

Latest modification i made for it was to paint front repeaters orange:

Image

Currently morettes are getting "polished" so they're not on it right now.

So here's where i got it :)

Ground clearance from front subframe to ground is 2cm in lowest position, driving height is about 5-6cm.

Good for you. Nice Job. Do you insure it as a 1.4 or a 16v??

It's a 16V on paper, only illegal mods are those front struts and tires are wrong size :) i think it was 205 tires for 7" rim, i have 185/45-15 ^^ We'll see what happens in MOT...

I quite agree. The bolts are only designed to locate the strut top not carry the load, the load is normally carried by the entire flange since the flange should be below the body pressing up on it.

Doesn't look like there are even any washers to spread the load a bit. The first judder bump that car hits at speed either the bolts will snap or it will tear out of the eyelets at the edge of the strut top frame. VERY dangerous and it shouldn't pass the MOT in that condition.

While I applaud most of the restoration work that has gone into the car I can't abide or understand the lowering of the suspension, apart from the safety issue with the strut tops the handling of the car is going to be completely compromised to the point where it is dangerous to drive at speed, which is a shame when the BX16v in standard spec arguably has pretty good handling. As with most lowering, its all for looks with no thought of actual handling or safe driving...

I agree hence my statement of being boring i chose not to make comment as Im usually the only one.. but the strut top positioning concerning the bolts never crossed my mind it was the ride or what there isn't left of it.. you might as well just of rotated the height correctors on the anti roll bars SOOOOOOOOOOO much less hassle..

i wonder what sort of mess the xantia hdi you own might end up in..

Just another thought..... Is the rise and fall as it is being driven 'taking that the spheres are in good order' it will to be blunt, smash (-expletive removed-) out of it :)

I was hoping to see a "bank" of accumulators and half inch piping to the front/rear suspension rams, so it could hop!

Although not to such extreme levels...

The BX is unlikely to be driven fast, I am sure the OP has also instituted other reinforcing measures not seen.

:-D :-D thats a good point, they are long travel spheres, if they were in good order on a standard setup you can bounce the suspension along full travel... theres no room for that.. So, Flat spheres in use here too???
