TPMS & MOT

Post by Fake Concern »

Does anyone know for sure what the position is regarding the MOT and TPMS. My car (C4 VTS) originally had TPMS fitted, but now has standard valves. After about an hour of driving I get the "Tyre pressures not monitored" message with a beep (and my wife invariably asks "what was that?"). Will this pass the MOT? It is not due until July, but as I'm going to get some new tyres soon, if I need them refitted, now is the time.

There will not be an issue MOT wise, but you should get the system switched off, just to save the annoyance.

Ummm... I think Actually, If I have read correctly some where in Car Mechanics mag, that Tyres Pressure sensors WILL be or ARE part of an MOT now, and if fitted SHOULD be working...

Think you better check with an MOT garage just incase you are left red faced...

I have the feeling though, they are MOT'd now... The MOT test has changed recently and now includes a LOT more then they used to. Even Air Bag lights are MOT now!!!

** EDIT: I thought so.... Sorry, they must WORK for MOT, click here

However, only if fitted to cars after Jan 2012....

surely if they are not fitted they cant be moted . bit like the spare wheel if its not with the car they cant include it in the mot. so if he doesnt refit the tyre pressure sensors and just turns them off with a lexia there is nothing to mot.

or am i barking up the wrong tree?

Im not 100% positive. I think the tester has to brush his knowledge up and think to himself, Ooo these have presser sensors on them, I winder if it works...

I agree, its MAD! But early systems on C5's Lagunas, etc are rather useless and dont work!

If the tester knows it should be there he could be picky.... or if he is nice and friendly like mine and is happy to let it go. he might, as long as warning lights are out.

i doubt any tester would have that much knowledge. unless its going to be on his computer everytime he logs a car on to it but i doubt that as it would be wrong most of the time and end up with most cars failing the mot on things it never had.

Tyres

Tyre pressure monitoring systems fitted to vehicles first registered after 1 January 2012 must be working correctly and not indicating a malfunction

so at that he will be ok as any of these cars will not be ready for an mot for another 2 years

So, to summarise, as there are no error messages only a "warning" after about an hours driving and the car dates from 2005 (55 reg), I shouldn't need to reinstate the sensors. Thanks for all the replies.

It certainly does, unless manufactures get their act together and sort the setup out...

Anyone have an idea how much a dealer would charge to do this?
