Xsara Picasso comms airbag ESP 6242 C6 96605656XT 96542560XT

Post by CGATCX25GTITURBO »

I'm sharing my experience regarding an airbag light that appeared on the dash of our Picasso, as I searched for infor myself and couldn't find what I needed to know.

If it is on here sorry for the re post.

Anyways the airbag light came on and I did the under seat connection checks, no joy there so I popped it along to my local Citroen dealer.
It was diagnosed as possible COMMS unit fault.
At 400 quid, that was a risk if it wasn't that. Finding the number on the comms unit (after removing only the steering cowl, it is found on a label on the unit ) I looked on ebay for a replacement. These were coming up at 300 quid new, so a bit cheaper than the dealers. The number on mine was 96542560XT, I found this number in the description of an ebay listing. The listing also quoted this unit would fit 96605656XT, the Citroen PSA number being 6242 C6. This gave me a few more options. I checked back with the dealer and was told. If I found one numbered 6242 C6 it would fit mine. I carried on looking using the XT numbers on the unit and found a new one but it was 96605656XT, however, the number on the box was the PSA part number 6242 C6. It was listed for a Citroen (this corrects the spelling but CIT was misspelled) C8 in the description. I won the the auction and paid 22 quid delivered for a brand new comms unit, and if it did't work, all wouldn't be lost for that price :)

So it arrived and it was fitted..... Yee haa the airbag light went out! then ding ding ESP waring light came on! Operating the ESP button on the dash had no effect (the led didn't illuminate on it)

Back up the the dealers as I had read sometimes the steering positon had to be recalibrated. A fault came up steering angles senor postion but I had fitted the unit out of the box and the arrow was pointing where it should, with the steering wheel locating in its tab. I explained the difference in the XT numbers and they it was possible it was the wrong unit... oh well back to the drawing board.

Me and the missus stopped off at the shops on the way home and while she was in there I pratted with the car some more. Started the car, steering wheel pointing straight ahead and the ESP light didn't come on, so I pressed the button on the dash and the ESP system de activated..... pressed again it and it re activated! I was getting excited now, doesn't take much.

I tuned the steering wheel to the right all was well, then I turned it to the left, as it passed the last 'straight ahead postion before hitting lock the ESP light came on again
I repeated what I had done again and found the wheels were pointing one turn to the left for it to work again . When I got home I took the steering wheel off and rotated the rotary switch one turn to the right and put it back together. Started it up and jobs a good un. It looks like someone had been playing with it before I fitted it.

Anyways in Summary

Despite the ebay listing title being misspelled and for the wrong car, I found that the numbers, 96605656XT and 96542560XT under the guise of 6242 C6 interchanged on my car, and after a bit of pratting sorted out a fitting issue and saving a lot of money in the process.

hope this heps someone else :)

The earlier clocksprings were simpler, as you had a little strain pointer to show when it was on the correct revolution. I guess they thought a good idea like that was unacceptable for continuing!

It has the pointer.... it was one complete revolution out, I'm guessing someone had been messing with it before I bought it.
