Replacement VIN plate
I've had to remove the Vin plate on my Zx as there was some alloy corrosion and the rivets had all but gone , the Vin plate is badly corroded too and unreadable from the face side ( but legible from the reverse side ) , I want to know is it possible to get a replacement ? Here's a pic of the plate .
Thanks , Mark

Malc, you've got to be kidding, you've got more chance of finding rocking horse poo or hens teeth than a ZX in a breakers yard these days!

Re: Replacement VIN plate
I'd personally get a bit of aluminium and re-stamp a new VIN tag thats readable, i'd also keep the old tag in the vehicle as proof should the identity of the car come into question by the authorities.

Re: Replacement VIN plate
I suspect that the official view would be that the vehicle should be scrapped.
No scrappie will sell you a VIN plate (that would get them into serious trouble - VIN plate to go with the paper-work for disposal), so you'd have to steal it.
At best, fitting a VIN plate from another vehicle will result in an MOT fail - at worst, arrest prosecution and a hefty fine.
The whole point of the VIN plate is that it physically identifies the vehicle for its entire life. Fitting one from another vehicle is an offence that will get you into serious trouble if you get stopped for a vehicle check. The police/VOSA will quickly discover that the vehicle doesn't match up with DVLA data or with the rest of the vehicle - it'll be impounded and crushed as a 'ringer' once you'd been convicted: both of stealing the VIN plate and altering the identity of your car (and you'd have to prove it was your car not some other, stolen, one).
Technically, the VIN plate must remain permanently attached to the vehicle. I'd take a good digital photo of the readable reverse side, make a mirror image of it, then print the mirror image and the unreadable side (matching corrosion holes will demonstrate that the two images are of the same VIN plate) life-size on a single sheet, laminate it and keep it in the car. Rivet the unreadable VIN plate back in place. That way you comply with the letter of the law, and the plate can be 'read'. Of course if you get stopped by a job's-worth, you'll have problems anyway. All Citroen's fault for using plain aluminium instead of a corrosion-resistant alloy.

Re: Replacement VIN plate
What about a year old car thats been in an accident & the plate has been damaged ? You must be able to order a replacement plate somehow ? A Lot of VIN 'plates' now are anti tamper stickers, the Renault Traffic has one on the B pillar, if you needed to repaint this then you would need a replacement. There must be some options.Old-Guy wrote:I suspect that the official view would be that the vehicle should be scrapped..

Re: Replacement VIN plate
I believe, but may be well wrong, that there's firms that make replacement VIN plates for classic cars. Trouble with stamping one yourself using individual letter and number punches is that it will be very obviously a 'home made' job and that might cause the MOT tester a bit of tooth-sucking too
EDIT: Steve's beaten me to it and come up with a firm Excellent!

it does show a drawing of the ZX estate VIN plate and beside it says NFP= no longer available and does not show a part No.
spoz you could always ask the dealer if they could stamp a Saxo one with your car details

Re: Replacement VIN plate
I wouldn't worry too much. The Vin plate on my ZX slowly rotted away until it became barely legible years ago.It has never caused a problem at mot time as the testers always look at the number stamped on the chassis.
In fact the mot manual states:. Check that the vehicle is permanently displaying a legible Vehicle Identification Number (this can either be
. on a VIN plate secured to the vehicle. or
. stamped or etched on the vehicle
body or chassis).
Hope this helps.
