Y reg HDi .. ok its ok.. other things...

Post by citroenxm »

Hi all..

This has been playing on my mind a short while now. My mum has a Y reg 2001 HDi 110 LX Xantia. It showing on the clock a milage of 128k which as we should know is not quite run in.

the car was bought off Ebay from up here.. unfortunally no history. I thought though, no probs only 117k when bought.

Mind you, the work Ive had to do to the car has me wondering...

The plastic water junction on the back of the block broke
Both track rod ends were needed.
Steering wheel covering was twistable on the steering
Bottom ball joint ( i know these are common)
All spheres, this is normal too I guess.
Steering problem, though is was a completely blocked Tank filter
LHM Pump leaks
Air con never worked
Cooling Fans didn;t work they still dont work how they should but one does for now
Drop links due for next MOT

Am I being paranoid for being a clocked car, or is this normal??

Just seems a lot for a late car, where as mine at 230k has nod nothing but track rods and tyres...

I think its just a car thats been neglected, most of those issues are common failures for a car that has 128k on it.

I wound guess at it being genuine mileage. All can perhaps be explainable by mileage, how it's been looked after and where/how it's been driven. You could always track down its past mots, as far as possible, to see for yourself.

You tend to get cars like that, my middle C5 was a troublesome car, despite it having genuinely less miles than our slightly older C5 which has been very little bother.

I'd tend to agree Paul... Those things are not unusual even on a relatively low mileage car.

How worn are the pedal rubbers and driver's seat? They can be very good indications, as can a hole in the driver's footwell carpet where heels have rested by the pedals...

I was driving a 2008 Xsara Picasso which had done 33,000 miles (genuine as it still had its very deep threaded original rear michelins) which had a very bald clutch pedal rubber, it was smooth and just about to wear through. My 2004 C5 had worn outs it's clutch pedal rubber when I bought it at 60,000 miles. I guess things like that depend on how much town work the car has done.

I think it's getting increasingly difficult to tell a cars mileage by visual wear and tear, as many cars stand up well to miles. When other cars look like they have done a million miles but have a genuinely low mileage.

I'm sure there is a rumour around that the very last of xantias are not the best built ones?

Correct, just Google "MOT check", you'll need the cars reg and V5 doc reference number or last MOT cert number.

Drivers seat is the ULTRA NON Wearing Velour trim, thats lastest for Centuries without wearing...

Not thought about looking at the rubbers.. The other thing I forgot to mention, the drivers strut top mount, I noticed has peeled badly like an S1 Strut top!.

So I pulled the rubber away and applied a load of Curerust to the metal, then when its set, get some underseal all under there to try stop it getting any worse.

For 128k and an S2 strut top, its NOT GOOD, even mine at 230k aren't peeling yet..

mine (t reg 110 hdi estate) when i got it on 160ish (april 2012) thousand looked as if it had been used as a shed on the inside, both front seats had holes in them, windowscreen scuttle drains were blocked so every time it rained water used to pour in the heater and then all over floor (only found that out a week ago but it has been like it since ive owned it), both anti roll links needed changing, both steering rack ends needed doing, the carpets are in a terrable condition, accumulator and anti sink spheres needed doing, the p bushes both needed doing, the estate hatch used to leak water as the membrane had come away, needed new battery leads as they had all melted together and a new battery

i have since found more work to be done but as i only found it a few weeks back and i have no garage at the minute im leaving it till decent weather arrives, it needs a full lhm change (as my lhm is a colour between green and brown) the rear hight corrector is sticky and dont always lower/raise the car during citorobics, need to refit all the foam under the passenger carpet as its currently drying out as i only found the leak about a week ago and ive had the car since april (whoops i thought it was the arial at first)

it depends who the last owners were and if they knew there car at all and if they abused it like mine has been

altho i must say this has been my best bargin xantia 300 quid for a hdi 110 estate she has needed a bit of work but it is still worth it in my eyes for a car which is doin decent mpg,

If price comes into it, mine has been amazing value im sure..

I have to agree a fourm members car or enthusiasts car are the ones to get. Mines a 1999 V reg Exclusive 110bhp... Two years last november (could be three) we went to south wales to have a look at it.. I handed £600 quid over and the car was on 156k.

On the drive home we had a rattley bottom pully VERY BAD, but I knew about that.. and the water was going down. So. Bottom pully, cambelt and water pump.. and now at 230k. what went wrong, well, very little to nothing... Tyres, track rod ends, front spheres, and very recently in the last 3k a dodgy fuel pump on the engine.. but she still goes and drives ok.

Strut tops arent peeling, heater is showing NO sign of leaking, clutch slipped a while back but has stopped slipping and is fine again.. I have an LHM leak on the rear anti sink valve (No, Jim, Ive still not done it..   )

We have just passed another mot. but I need front disks and pads, Ive a nasty vibration when breaking... and all joints are good due to recent MOT pass..

What would the car get me now?? Well, looking at recent prices, once Ive sorted the pump issue out, the leather looks like 100k miles.. Id think £600 quid?? FREE MOTORING! Thats what I like!

I managed to sort the indicator stalk due to the worn mad ticking they do..

While i was there I got the lexia attached and had a look about.. and found the option to switch on the cruise control...

So the later Y reg ECU has the option... I wonder now if an X plater will have the option.. The reason I need to look at slight older ones, W or X is that Y reg HDi's are rather scarse, due to the C5 being out. Most Y reg Xantias are the lesser Petrol 16v engine because they didn't sell as easily

Annoyingly I had an X reg HDi and never knew about this...

The search for HDi cruise ECU in what age of car continues...

Paul, as you have all the cruise bits on yours I wonder if you might swap ECUs over so you can enjoy it working.

It's not easy as you’ll need the CPH and transponder as well...

Or else just swap cars and fit the cruise stalk and so on to that one

I would do that Jim, but scared I render TWO xantias dead...

Wouldn't like to leave mums car dead anyway.. I have thought about swapping ECUs and CPH's over. I just need to re-teach the keys again?? Or is it not that simple..

As far as I know Paul but as you say, it's a bit of a risk.... You'd need to take the best advice from someone who knows more about doing this than I before plunging into it...

To be honest, Dickie G has already said this too.. I guess with a Lexia, I cant get stuck really...

I might just swap mums with the Scrap T reg HDi 110 in the rear yard first.. Get that sorted then go and do mine..
