Batteries....

Post by RichardW »

Looks like the deep discharge a few weeks ago when the alternator packed up has killed the battery on the Xantia - been slow to turn over the last couple of days, then when I started it this afternoon to come home from work, both dials shot right round as it was being cranked - fortunately both come back to a proper reading! It is 6 years old I think, and covered maybe 70k miles, and it was only a std Halfords job so it's done OK. However, looks like the one on the Picasso is getting a bit tired too - it brings the eco mode on pretty quickly, and is a bit slow cranking, and today the blower didn't start until I revved the engine a bit. Looks like the same battery on both cars though, so I think the Picasso one will do a turn on the Xantia yet as it has a pretty easy life, with generally one start then a 30 mile run. The Picasso on the other hand does mostly short runs around town, with fewer longer runs so the battery has a harder time. What recommendations for new batteries? Will have to get whatever is in stock at the factors, but nice to have a recommendation if there is a choice.

Trying to remember where I got mine from, Bosch and reasonably priced.
Someone recommended the supplier in an old thread.

Last winter I fitted an Exide Premium, Type 075, which appears to be a fairly common size (physically), on not too large engines. They come in different CCA and Amp Hr capacities, and guaranteed life. The higher the CCA the better (and more expensive of course). I opted for 600 CCA, and 60 Amp Hr, which is (I think) about the maximum you'll get out of any battery sized at 075.

I like the 075 weight wise, as I can just manage to lift it out and carry it, so long as I'm careful.

Exide, Bosch, Varta are all good makes, though I've had good life from lesser known brands.

If you want to get the best value for money look on ebay for a battery supplier who gives the weight of the battery, the more lead you get for your money the better the battery should be.

I've just ordered a new battery for the Berlingo from that lot Richard. I've used them a few times in the past with no problems at all.

Got one from the factors - unknown make, but it's 70 Ah and 750 CCA - not bad for £60. Especially when a Crimbo tree costs £30 - but that's another story!

However, might not be the only cause / problem - checked the +ve terminal when I got back from the factors and it was pretty hot - so there might be an issue there too. It was fine till a week ago though, and cranking really fast after I fitted the new alt, and will crank fine when it's recently been run. Will do the battery shuffle and see how we get on.

Might be an idea to check the -ve lead as well. That's where mine failed I just got one from Halfords and put it in alongside the original to share the load.
Got my battery from Costco ...about £50...they're really competitive on car bits

if your live lead is warm/hot check the post at the top of the citroen section, all 4 cables from the battery terminal had melted together on mine ( 1 cable for altinator/starter and 3 for the fuse box) if you need new leads as well as terminal halfords (of all places) do reasonably cheap battery leads, you'll know if they are knackered if they wont bend and are solid,

Put the new battery on - cranking speed much improved, but dials still dancing to the beat of the compression, and +ve clamp was getting hot... :( managed to get some quick release clamps from Halfords (much like the ones DickieG posted in this thread The clamp looks a bit feeble to start with, but just takes the full cable open, and pulls up tight. Cranks OK now, and clamp was just aired after a few minutes idling.

Now I just have to work out how to get the battery out of the C4 Picasso, so i can swap them over....
