407 starting problem

Post by 407iain »

hi guys.
I have a 2005 2.0 HDi Peugeot 407, and it has developed an issue when starting. Sometimes it turns over, fires and randomly dies within a second or two. it will re start and run fine. it starts fine when warm.
ive no idea. I have Peugeot planet and have scanned it and it shows no fault codes.
any clues greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I'd of expected it to show a code. I did think of a transponder aerial issue however if that was playing up on a 407 it would not fire at all, just crank lifelessly.

Do you have a lift pump in the tank ?

Try this anyway:

Switch ignition on, wait a few seconds (2 or 3 is enough as you're waiting for the lift pump not preheating) then switch it off. Then just try to start it normally.

See if that gives any improvement, it may be the lowpressure (lift) pump on its way out.
Andy.

Thanks for your reply mate. I shall try that.
Ill give it another scan with planet to see if it has logged any codes from the other day when it did the start thing.

Just moved it from one car park to another at work. I Had it parked nose up on a slope.
It didnt start again. Could this point to the problem?
Its only been there 5.5 hours.
Normally it does the starting game after longer than that..

Ive had a look at the leak off pipes and joints they look ok. Im going to try the hand primer to see if its soft later.
I have however noticed a the egr pipe isnt seated brilliantly at the front of the block. There are sooty blow marks on nearby pipes/things.

Bit more randomness.
It's been fine all week, left it for 2 days in the cold and ice on the drive. Wednesday morning, started on the key.
Today after an hour in town, it played its little game again. Went out at tea time, started fine again...

Did the hand primer feel ok? I had similar starting problem with my xantia and after fitting a new one, problem solved. Also worth checking is the seal on the fuel filter, just to rule out the possibility of air being drawn into the system.

I've got to take the wife for her works night out in an hour or so, so I'll check it before I set off. If it's soft theres an issue!

Still no PP codes either, although I only got chance for a quick scan so I couldnt check the live data on fuelling etc.

Well its been starting ok for the last week or so, if taking a bit of cranking.
Now the economy is down!

Ive noticed, if i keep cranking when its done the start-stop it will not start at all.
But if i turn the ignition off and on again it starts fine.

You really need it plugging in to be checked what's going on. I thought about a few things but at a random guess its not getting enough fuel pressure on a restart / recrank so the ECU is not opening the injectors. A cause could be the HP pump or the 3rd piston inside at a random guess but a diag session should show what is really going on.

I have PP on my laptop. My only issue is I dont really know what Im, looking at. Ive disabled the TPM that was easy, and reset a few fault codes. But when it comes to looking at live data Ive no idea. Mainly because I cant find a set on the net to compare it to.
