Yeah its the rods (ball joints) on top of the gearbox, I have been told that one of them is worn because the gear lever has fair amount of play in it and its sometimes difficult to get it in reverse. Im not going ot pay the garage to do it as they want £50+ for the bit plus fitting. Can you give me prices for all of them.

No its still the same. I dont get any problems getting gears its just that the change is very sloppy and notchy. I would check the clutch adjustment if you are having problems getting reverse gear. On mine to check the clutch adjustment I measure the travel of the pedal which is 150mm ish, but mines the 1.4 so not sure what the measerment for the diesel is. If you want me to find out I can.
Try and engage 5th first and then quickly put it into reverse to see if that helps but dont force it if doesnt want to go in. If it does help it means that your clutch maybe dragging a bit.

Sounds like the clutch is dragging. Is the pedal on the floor when it breaks? If so you can probably adjust it. many years ago I had this problem with a Cortina 2000 GT and just lived with it until one night the diaphragm spring in the clutch broke. When I took the clutch apart I found the driven plate was slightly larger than the presser and a whisker had formed round the edge causing the drag.

I agree with Jeremy, sounds like the clutch is on the way out, I think the thrust race cuts a channel in the diaphragm, then the clutch gets heavier and doesnt disengage properly, driveabel in the forward gears but nasty in reverse, have you tried stopping the engine before engaging reverse gear? if its easier with the motor stopped then theres your diagnosis.
