Xantia 110 HDI. What to do???

Post by Stepto1 »

Well, the dog has done quite a bit of damage. I need a new bumper, mounts, grill, headlight, headlight trims and fog light.

In addition, the xantia needs new drop links (as usual), new front discs/pads (as usual), new top engine mount and two new front tyres.

This I can take care of as the bits and time are not too costly. However, after the accident, I now have a flashing 'STOP' light which flashes in unison with the LED on the temperature gauge. Why is this flashing? There is plenty of coolant and the engine isn't even warm when it starts flashing. The fan (near side) runs.

I don't mind the spannering but I'm not wasting time on a car that will be flashing half it's dashboard at me for no reason.

Help?!

The stop light and flashing red light will be related to the cooling fans Stepto!

The ECU has detected they are not working for what ever damage there is and is flagging that up in the way you are seeing!

Are you in need of all the parts, or are you sorted?

Ive a few HDi 110 Rads sitting around in the shed.. Ive got a whole S2 in silver to go at some point too, but I want the engine..

I can probably sort you everything out.. I also broke a green S2 recently too, which was a complete car.

As a slight aside, was the dog black :!:

As in my line of work it always seems to a black dog that causes all the problems :-D

Until we received an e mail saying the balck dog had been caught

Thanks guys.

I've already got the headlight and fog light. Not got the other bits yet. I was hoping to find them in black but it may have to be a rattle can session.

Can't understand the fans. They've not worked all year and only ever set off the warning lights when I put the a/c on. Now the near side fan IS working as it should but the warning light is on all the time.

Didn't have chance to see what colour the dog was on the outside, I know what colour it is on the inside!

The thermo-switch for the fans has been a problem on mine. Changed a couple of times and cleaned from time to time. I've been told the switch changes the fan wiring between series and parallel, so you should expect both to run for either speed.

The temperature sender is the one on the side of the radiator?

The a/c fan has never worked. The near side cooling fan now runs.

How can I stop the 'STOP' light flashing? It's driving me mad. It flashes about 20 times. Stops for about 10 seconds then starts again. It's torture at night.

Are you sure that you haven´t directed blower all the way to the windshield? If you have, then the AC is on eventhough the AC-button isn´t pressed.

I drove 110HDi Xantia from 240000km to 370000km, and those lights flashed from time to time. One of the fans didn´t want to rotate in halfspeed (when AC is on, both fans rotate halfspeed), and that caused the flashing. I just hit the stuck fan in the center with long screwdriver, and that usually fixed it for some time. I think there´s carbon dust inside fan motor that is causing this problem. It´s possible to dismantle and clean the motor, and it works again.

Hello Stepto1,

You said the fans haven't worked all year. Are you sure of this? The fans are (usually) quiet, and (on my former 110HDi) hardly ever came on (except when the A/C was on). Mind you, I never had the temperature go over 90 at any time, so maybe the normal air movement was enough to keep her cool.

They never worked, even with the a/c on.

I changed the relays with no joy.

I'll see what happens with the air off the windscreen.

Got all the bits I need for £55 so the old shed is still on the road!

It is the a/c setting the warning light off when it's set to the windscreen. Didn't know it did that!

I'll replace the faulty fan while I'm rebuilding the front end next weekend.

When I got my first Xantia I didn't know about that either. However, when you think about it (and if you know one item) it makes sense. When the A/C is running it dries out the air passing through it. When you are drying the windscreen you don't want damp air blowing at it. Hence the A/C switching on.
