XANTIA 1.9TD Tickover

Unread post by chrisjvm »

Apologies if its been asked a thousand times, but what should the RPM be on tickover... ? My newly acquired beauty is ticking over at approx 1050 rpm ... It sounds like its 'racing' to me.

Assuming you have a mechanical pump, adjust the speed for the smoothest tickover.

Thanks Peter,
I'm presuming its a Bosch pump....
I hope so! Because i put its first feed of sunflower oil in it today (20 litres)
Not sure if it was the placebo effect but it seemed to run a lot smoother :)

The official idle speeds for the 1.9TD Xantia are:

Warm idle without air con 800rpm +0 -50
Warm idle with air con 850rpm +0 -50
Cold idle either 950 +-50

The default setting is cold idle, warm idle is activated by an electrovalve located on the bulkhead between the engine and LHM tank. Electrovalves are prone to fail so idle speeds tend to be around 1000rpm, mine looks like it's sat around 1050rpm too.

When the engine is at proper running temperature, behind the injection pump you'll find a lever attached to a cable, using a screwdriver push the lever to your right (looking from the front of the car) and you should notice a change in engine note. That's warm idle.

If you want a permanent warm idle and your vacuum pump and pipes on the end of the cam shaft are in working order you can bypass the electrovalve and put the pipe straight into the vacuum cable puller.
If that doesn't work I've had success with unclipping the spring on the lever behind the injection pump. For the winter mine is running on cold idle, my logic being that it will help even idle out when running on percentage of veg oil in the cold weather.
