Newb with first C5

Post by jelly »

Hi, I have recently bought my second Citroen first one with this type of suspension the last being a C3 Pluriel have already had to do the dipped headlights (cuts nearly healed) one of the suspension supply pipes is corroded :( price from Citroen is not bad been told to change it it is a simply job of lifting car off wheels changing pipe and then pumping the suspension up and down and job is done :?: is that the case, and any thing else I need to look out for?
Thanks in advance :)

Welcome.Think you need to tell the guys what car you have first. Year, variant, engine might get a response. There are so many different C5's and they all have there own specialists I reckon.

rear brake caliper corrosion do a search for that its well decumented. you are right about the susspension but if you are umder the car make sure it is well supported. most other faults will be electrical as the car is just 1 big computer well worth investing in a lexia.

You will need LDS fluid, and you can never have enough (but a couple of liters should be more than enough for your needs).

There is a known issue with the C5s and the Xantias, which is rear caliper corrosion. It can be sorted out, but takes a bit of time. However, as you have a C5, you probably have the added problem of threadlock on the bolts. The following link is for the problem on a Xantia, but it should be the same for a C5.

GSF parts do the Total LDS fluid and it is about £4 cheaper than the dealer...
a thing to keep in mind

As hell razor says, rear calipers are an real issue leaning in due to corrosion between the caliper and arm.. Leave it too long and you will also have damaged disks, and rear disks are not cheap on these either...

Ive not heard about any issues with rusty pipes on C5's yet, this is probably why you didn't get much of a response, if no one else has had the issue they cant really reply..

I done a lot of work on a C5, but not pipe work.. So I cant even tell you if dooing Citrobics would work of not. The system is slightly different to Xantias and XM's.. which is what most of us are more used to [Xantia]

Had to ask. Is this caliper problem still there in C5 III, or has it been ironed out?

No idea, been no where near them.

The C5III is based on the C6, so my guess is it could not be, but I dont really know..

Funny really, the XM did NOT suffer this problem either... This is because the XM calipers are only in contact with the Arm in the Bolt fixing areas, so theres no face to face area to trap water and corrode..

I can't see how this problem can rear it's ugly head on the latest C5 as on those the rear caliper is more conventional in that it is mounted on a steel carrier arm on which the caliper 'floats'.

Well there we are... incidentally, where is the hand brake on the C5 III, most importantly, on the Exclusives?? Are they all on the rears??

It's electric just behind the gear lever operating on the rear calipers, thankfully its operated by a electric motor located in the centre of the car pulling cables.

Citroen made a very wise decision there as other manufacturers such as Volvo and Audi have the motors located within the calipers so heaven knows what'll happen to the motors after 5+ years of the calipers being bathed in general grime and salt, not to mention that to change the rear pads on these Audi's and Volvo's requires the use of a diagnostic tool to withdraw the pistons back into the caliper
