Yes that makes sense - and you should now be able to see that the intercooler can be bypassed (so as not to cool down engine incoming air, when the fap is regenning. This is because the fap itself needs to be v.hot)

nearly bumping the thread but not quite.........
dragon have you considered getting rid of the butterflys altogether? I've de-fapped too and wonder if the 2.0 hoses (or other cit /pug of the same era) might fit, so that the intercooler can be piped direct to the manifold? (need a replacement intercooler feed too) Be a scrappy job to source them I 'spose.

i am thinking doing it
will need to make pice on intake, for one hose only
get rid off bottom pipe, make new pipe from plastic to intercooler (ally one)
few silicon bends
keep electro valves where they are, block vacc to them

I am a bit confused on my 2.2 the top one is open at the bottom one is closed on tickover when the rpm is increased the top one starts to close but the bottom one stays firmly shut i have connected both to a vacuum and they both work ok the car lacks power and runs out of steam at 3.000 rpm the turbo seems to be working but there is no real grunt to speak of,the car had more power up until the point i changed the egr valve i have checked all pipework and all seems ok.at the moment i have disconnected the pipes from both butterflys and blanked the vacuum hoses of,,this has made no difference to the cars performance .
Thanks Ian

As you've checked the bottom one works by connecting it to vacuum but it doesn't actuate automatically it sounds like the vacuum modulator or solenoid valve connected to the bottom one isn't working properly - so it's bypassing the intercooler at all times, which would affect performance...

If you have a vacuum gauge you could attach to the little pipe that goes to the actuator and rev the engine as described above and see if it ever sees a vacuum - if not you need to check that vac harness for leaks (try attaching your vacuum pump to the other end of the vac pipe leading to the actuator) and if that's ok, you probably need a new solenoid valve...
