Bio Diesel in a C5

Post by Lighty »

Interested to hear your opinions on this. Having a few issues lately, and have just purchased a Delphi fuel analyser, to sort out where I stand.
Have to say its very interesting, and makes me wonder how often I have been needlessly chasing around trying to fix self induced problems.
Every single car with ANY fuel issue will be checked now, as the tester was very expensive, but I suspect will save me a lot of messing about.
How many have used bio, can you teach me about it ? I have been googling for an hour or two now. seems like manufacturers dont accept any more than about 7% ish.
What are your experiences ?

If you keep Googling you'll come across a PSA document that says their engines will tolerate up to 35% of biodiesel.

The HDi engine will use and HAS been approved by PSA for Bio diesel HOWEVER, it needs to be made Very well indeed and as long as the fuel (Bio) is rather "Diesel" like and runs well, it will be fine! Ive ran my HDi on some well made home made Bio and it loved it and even improoved the MPG!!!

Its thick gooey veggie oil that HDi's dont like it is too thick for the pump and injectors..

I noticed today the price of veggie oil off the self is almost the same price as petrol!

Hmmm... Sure about that? been having some correspondence with someone in another place who claims to be running a 2.2 hdi on chipfat with a dash of unleaded. Mind I don't think it's done may miles yet.

Forgive my French...but b*gger me that engine isn't going to be very happy about that.

You should probably tell him to stop it before he needs a new fuel system...

Yes!! you may well be right however chap say's he knows what he's doing, reckons he's been running his F@rd Mondeo (Delphi injection system) on the same fuel for many thousands of miles.
Me? I like people that try and do what everybody else says can't be done one usually learns a lot from them even if the exercise fails.
Apparently it does run on this concoction, he's having a little trouble with economy but it runs, big question is for how long.
Lets be fair you have to have a fair pair of balls to stand against the herd, or supreme confidence in your own knowledge and ability's OR........ be a complete nutter! and I don't get the impression that he's a nutter so I shall stand back, observe from afar and watch with interest :-)

That's extremely debatable.
cachaciero wrote: a complete nutter!
This is more likely. A lot of people like to play chemist when they get their hands on a diesel engine - and to an extent you could get away with it in the past (the XUD lump will run on all kinds of muck). Modern diesel systems are rather fosisticated (read EXPENSIVE) bits of kit. One would have to think long and hard about shoving something like chip fat through a set of extremely precise nozzles that cost around £200 a pop.

If it works for him at the moment, fine, but I would bet any amount of money that it'll stop working very, very shortly.

The one I knew, was a 16 valve 2.0, 138 bhp model, filled the sump with fuel, blew the turbo, and presumably wrecked the injectors =D>

I'm at the 300 miles on commercially made biodiesel just added a pre filter to collect all the crap from the lines and tank as it is cheaper than the main filter and being clear I can keep a better eye on it. So far no probs (touch wood) performance seems a little down and a bit hard to start in the morns needs a little bit of welly or the revs fluctuate but after that she runs fine

Bio Is PERFECTLY Fine, if its well made it is Liqidly runny enough to work fine .... The issue is THICK veggie oil, that the HDi fuel system does NOT like

We will see sooner or later.... in this topic...
